Cricket teams had come and gone in Isel for more than a century at the whim of the Lord of the Manor.
The current Isel CC were re-founded on June 21st 1987.
Isel have played 499 matches in all competitions and friendlies during their 20 seasons as a club, they also played in the Cumbria indoor league (1989-90 to 1993-94). They have had 104 different opponents! Have competed in 12 different cups, reaching four finals and winning half of them.
Two batsmen have scored in excess of 5000 runs for the club: James Gate 5924 & John Gate 5179 and two bowlers have taken over 300 wickets: Gerald Bowe 373 and John McGuffie 369. These four plus Steve Balmforth and Terry Johnstone have all played for the club on more than 350 occasions.
The season records are: most runs 628 James Gate in 1999: most wickets John McGuffie 40 in 1989 and the most dismissals in a season was by David Eden in 1989 – ct 16 st 4. The highest score was 111* by Phil Knight in 1999 and the best bowling of 6-10 came from Guy Brentall in 1988.
They joined the west Cumbria midweek league in 1989, winning northern div 2 in 1997.
During their spell in this league James Gate amassed 3667 runs & held 95 catches, Gerald Bowe claimed 211 wickets. Individual highlights included: in 1989 John McGuffie taking 5-13 v Pentagon, in 1991 James Gate taking a hat trick versus Pentagon, in 1992 James Gate taking 5-11 also against Pentagon, John McGuffie taking 5-8 v Stainburn in 1994, James Gate amassing 544 runs at an average of 68 in the 1999 season, also that season Phil Knight hit 111* against Dearham (with 7 sixes), in 2003 John Gate made 101* by hitting the final 3 balls of the innings for 6 against Yankees. Isel still managed to lose all three matches in which the Gate brothers shone!
In 2005 they joined WACCA, winning the Border Leisure Shield in their debut season.
