Isakhel

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Isakhel is a town and tehsil (an administrative subdivision) of Mianwali District in the Punjab province of Pakistan[1] and is located at 32°52'56N 70°55'3E[2].

Isakhel is an important town located in the west of Mianwali District. It is a historical town named after Isa Khan, a famous Niazi chief. Until November 1901 Isa Khel was tehsil headquarters of Bannu District - however after the North-West Frontier Province was created from Punjab province, Bannu district was included in the NWFP without the Isakhel tehsil. Isa Khel which was trans-Indus tehsil became part of the newly formed Mianwali district of the Punjab.

[edit] History

In 1901, when the tehsil became part of Mianwali, the population the town was 7,630, whilst that of Kalabagh was 5,824 - the tehsil contained 43 villages[3].

The Bhangi Khel are a soldierly, but numerically small, section of the great Khattak tribe, and occupied their present country about 400 years ago. The tehsil derives its name from the Isa Khel tribe, a section of the Niazai Afghans, who, settling here during the sixteenth century, long maintained their independence of the Mughal empire, and at last succumbed to the Nawab of Dera Ismail Khan[3].

Isa Khel is also famous for the Feudal Niazi chiefs who were designated Nawabs during the British colonial era. Some of them got the title of "Khan Bahadur" during that period. Isa Khel remains the first Niazi stronghold in the district after they left the Marwat plains.

[edit] Location

The tehsil lies on the west bank of the Indus and is cut off from the rest of the District by this river, to the west are the semicircular fringes of the Chichali and Maidani hills which separate the area from Bannu District by the. These hills drain into Isa Khel and make it fertile. Its extreme northern portion, known as the Bhangi Khel country, is a wild and rugged region, a continuation of the Khattak hills[3].
