Irving Berlin et al. v. E.C. Publications, Inc.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Irving Berlin et al. v. E.C. Publications, Inc., 329 F.2d 541 (2d Cir. 1964), was an important parody/copyright law case decided in 1964 which created the "Mad Magazine exception". Mad Magazine had published a number of parody lyrics to existing songs, including Berlin's A Pretty Girl is Like a Melody. The court found for Mad publisher E.C., establishing a legal precedent protecting parody (but not, at that time, satire).
