Talk:Iron Maiden (hard rock band)

How can an "acoustic band" possibly be "doom metal"? Doesn't make any sense. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.70.27.42 (talk • contribs) 09:09, 8 September 2006
"Acoustic" was the original band that later evolved into this "Iron Maiden".
Trev Thoms describes the band as "progressive heavy rock" though, so I am not sure where this "doom" comes from. -- Beardo 12:48, 13 September 2006 (UTC)
'Doom metal' is a term that has only really come into being more recently, so with with regard to the 'original' Iron Maiden, it's used more as a retrospective thing. People now consider them to be among the first doom metal bands. It's much like how Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin were never called 'heavy metal' until years after their formation. -- Thesexualityofbereavement
- But has anyone got a source for calling them "doom metal". At least Trev's "progessive heavy metal" can be cited. (Especially as Trev is the only one with any sort of subsequent career.) -- Beardo 14:46, 27 November 2006 (UTC)

- It's referred to as 'doom metal' in the liner notes to the 'Maiden Voyage' CD, written by the record company (Audio Archives), but no specific writing credit is given. --Humanoidboogie 20:40, 29 November 2006 (UTC)

- I have the Downer Rock Genocide comp also by Audio Archives which categorizes Iron Maiden as a proto-doom metal band. After listening to them they are definitely not doom metal. I would categorize them as more a proto-metal/hard rock band. Any suggestions on what we should change the title to? Perhaps Iron Maiden (hard rock band) or Iron Maiden (60s band). - I moved the article to Iron Maiden (hard rock band) and removed the references to doom metal. Their label seems to tout them as a doom pioneer but no one else does. I can't even find an article on them. Olliegrind 14:10, 18 June 2007 (UTC)

- I agree that at times the lines are blurred, but in this instance I do not see a conflict. I feel the label is throwing a doom metal tag on this release to sell copies. The music is clearly not doom metal (IMO). An argument could be made for heavy metal, but since doom metal didn't really become a genre until well into the 80s it would be hard to put these guys in there. Even Black Sabbath, the band that inspired all doom bands to come is not listed as doom metal here. I feel hard rock or proto-metal is an accurate description. I tried to find some references either way (doom or hard rock or other) and couldn't find any info online. It is probably questionable as whether they are even notable enough to have an article on wikipedia. Olliegrind 17:45, 18 June 2007 (UTC)
