[edit] Demographics
As of the census[2] of 2000, there were 321 people, 122 households, and 96 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 35.0 people per square mile (13.5/km²). There were 148 housing units at an average density of 16.1/sq mi (6.2/km²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 92.83% White, 0.62% Black or African American, 0.62% Native American, 2.18% from other races, and 3.74% from two or more races. 5.61% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There were 122 households out of which 33.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 69.7% were married couples living together, 7.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 21.3% were non-families. 18.0% of all households were made up of individuals and 6.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.63 and the average family size was 2.94.
In the CDP the population was spread out with 24.9% under the age of 18, 5.0% from 18 to 24, 26.8% from 25 to 44, 27.1% from 45 to 64, and 16.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females there were 85.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.4 males.
The median income for a household in the CDP was $30,208, and the median income for a family was $30,000. Males had a median income of $29,091 versus $25,938 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $11,732. About 14.0% of families and 9.8% of the population were below the poverty line, including none of those under age 18 and 22.2% of those age 65 or over.

In the state legislature Iron Horse is located in the 1st Senate District, represented by Republican Dave Cox, and in the 3rd Assembly District, represented by Republican Rick Keene. Federally, Iron Horse is located in California's 4th congressional district, which has a Cook PVI of R +11[3] and is represented by Republican John Doolittle.
