The Iron Ring, Cinturón de Hierro in Spanish, was a vast, labyrinthine fortification around Bilbao, consisting of bunkers, tunnels, and fortified trenches in several rings, protected by artillery. It was rushedly built during the Spanish Civil War by the Basque Government. However during the battle of Bilbao it was breeched as it was not finished and its designer Alejandro Goicoechea had defected to the Nationalist side with the plans.
