[edit] Disallowed external link

Note: the following discussion dates back to May '08; Themintyman learned about indentation halfway thru. Final comment is here: User_talk:Themintyman.

Hi there,

I see you are taking advice on whether the site www.semi-directory.com should be banned. I am the user adding it to categories. This is the first time I have used Wikipedia so I would appreciate someone talking to me directly instead of reporting me without involving me first.

I was under the impression that informational resources were ok? I understand the promotion of a company or products is against the rules but I am not doing either. The site is a resource that offers further information (in the form of technical papers, downloads and establishments involved in that area) on the associated categories.

I would appreciate it if you could explain things to me.

Thanks Themintyman (talk) 17:23, 8 May 2008 (UTC)

You asked about my comment here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Thingg#noob_alert. It appears that the issue has been addressed in several comments on the talk page of the IP you were using for the edits you said you had made, namely http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:195.173.69.2. 1)How are you affiliated with these *-directory sites and 2)are these yours http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Contributions/86.0.193.129 too)? 3)Are the sites themselves non-commercial? --IReceivedDeathThreats (talk) 05:29, 13 May 2008 (UTC)

Hi,

Thanks you for getting back in touch. Please accept my apologies for the confusion over the various IP's I have been using. At first, I didn't realise I was on a public IP. I also made a submission from another PC so that would confuse things further. Finally, I created an account (this one) and have been using it since. I hope this explains things.

Here are the answers to your questions:

1) I created the site myself. There is only 1 site involved - semi-directory.com. I am involved with no others. 2) Of the posts listed on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Contributions/86.0.193.129, only the ones dated 1st may 2008 are mine. The others are not. I have no idea who wrote the others. 3) The anser to this is both 'yes' and 'no'. The site is free to use and free to register with. Every semiconductor establishment (commercial and non-profit) is entitled to a free listing in the directory. However, commercial organizations can upgrade to a 'premium' account to unlock certain tools such as the ability to post corporate events and press releases. Banner advertising is also available.

The site was created with the intention of helping people in the semiconductor industry research potential suppliers and offer a resource to download technical papers, literature and interview for free (www.semi-directory.com/downloads.asp). The primary intention of the site is not to make money.

Since a few people are involved in this issue now, who is the admin I should be talking to about this?

Wikipedia:Talk_page_guidelines mentions using colons for threaded discussions, like I've used here. I see you've figured out how to sign your post; good going. If you feel your edits respect Wikipedia:Spam#External_link_spamming, then that page should have pointers about how to proceed. I'm thinking it doesn't. That doesn't mean it's not a legit site. It just means I think it doesn't belong where you've put it here on Wikipedia. --IReceivedDeathThreats (talk) 19:05, 14 May 2008 (UTC)
Ok, i've got the colons sorted out. Thanks for that. I read the page you pointed me to but it doesn't indicate anywhere how to contest a removed link. I reviewed http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:External_links and feel I do cover the following points:
   * Is it accessible to the reader? - yes
   * Is it proper in the context of the article (useful, tasteful, informative, factual, etc.)? -yes
   * Is it a functional link, and likely to continue being a functional link? -yes
*Where editors have not reached consensus on an appropriate list of links, a link to a well-chosen web directory category could be used until such consensus can be reached.
The site I linked to is not affiliated with any industry publications or funded by any unbrella corporations. It is standalone and designed to aid research. Wikipedia does not offer a comprehensive list of organizations related to a specific feild in this area so I thought I could contribute.
Is there any way I can get this decision reviewed? Regards, Themintyman (talk) 21:08, 14 May 2008 (UTC)
