Ipswich Girls' Grammar School (IGGS) is an independent, Non-denominational, day and boarding school for girls, in Ipswich, Queensland, Australia.

The school is one of the eight original 'Queensland Grammar Schools'. These schools are independent, non-denominational, not-for-profit statutory bodies of the Queensland Government. They are not linked to, administered, or governed by any religious organisation or specific style of education.

IGGS maintains a strong connection to Ipswich Grammar School. Both boys and girls were previously taught at Ipswich Junior Grammar School at the primary school situated on the Girls' School campus. However, in recent years, Ipswich Grammar School has opened its doors to the junior boys. In the high school years, the sexes are segregated. Boys attend Ipswich Grammar School at a separate campus; however, the lower years at IGGS (years Prep through to 3) are still co-ed though not many boys attend. Grades 4 and above are single sex.

The school is a member of the Queensland Girls' Secondary Schools Sports Association (QGSSSA).

[edit] Ipswich Junior Grammar School

The head of the Junior School is Karen McArdle, who is assisted by Lorna Liddel, who is also a Year 6 teacher. The Junior School is open from Prep through to Year 6. Year 7 is part of the middle school system. The Junior School, with the assistance of the P&F, organises many co-curricular activities, such as gymnastics, tai kwon do, school dances and music and drama lessons. For most purposes, the Junior School is distinct from the Senior School, and conducts its own assemblies, has its own pledge and organises its own activities. However, many facilities on the IGGS/IJGS campus are shared by both the Junior and Senior Schools, such as the gymnasium, hall and oval, and the School newsletter is published for all students from Prep to Year 12.

[edit] Campus

The School's campus is located in central Ipswich, and features a mixture of historic buildings dating to its inception in 1892 and more modern facilities which have been added over the years. The buildings are spread around the campus, interspersed with many green areas and gardens. Facilities include the performing arts block, state-of-the-art graphics and art studios, gymnasium, swimming pool and specialised language classrooms.

[edit] New Buildings

Following a devastating fire that destroyed a major block in the Senior School on 27 August 2005, IGGS has embarked on a major building program. Two new buildings are currently being constructed, after several years of negotiations undertaken by the School’s Board of Trustees and Executive; these buildings cost over $20 million and are expected to be completed by the beginning of the 2009 school year.

The new five level Senior School building will include replacement of the Senior classrooms and Science laboratories destroyed by the fire plus additional facilities including administration and student services area, an auditorium and function room. The four level Junior School building will increase enrolment capacity with 12 new classrooms and provide students with state-of-the-art facilities including a new library and computer rooms.

[edit] Leadership

From 2008, all leadership positions in the school will be shared by Co-Captains. Every year, two Head Girls and two Boarding Captains are chosen, as well as Captains for each sport, and Captains for co-curricular activities such as debating, music and drama. Two Middle School Captains are chosen from the Year 9 student body. Leadership is encouraged at all year levels, with Form Captains being elected for every class. All Year 12 students are expected to act as mentors and role models for the younger grades.

[edit] House System

Ipswich Girls' Grammar School has a house system, whereby students are members of one of five houses for the purposes of interhouse activities. These houses, named after the first five Headmistresses, are Hunt (red), Connell (pink), White (green), Armitage (yellow) and Carter (purple). Students are allocated to a house on entry to the school and generally remain in the same house for their entire time at the school. Senior year students assist teachers in managing the students during events.

Interhouse activities include music and drama competitions held every second year, and sporting events such as swimming, athletics and cross-country. At the end of each year, two trophies are presented, to the Houses which have performed best in areas such as academic achievement, sports and cultural activities.

In Year 7 and 8, students are allocated a mentor known as a "Big Sister", from Year 9 and 12 respectively. These mentors are responsible for introducing the younger students to the school and providing help and support where necessary. Big Sister/Little Sister activities are organised regularly; these activities have included egg swaps at Easter, games at lunchtime and morning tea together. Big and Little Sisters always come from the same House.
