The datagram checksum for the whole IP datagram. Every time anything in the datagram changes, it needs to be recalculated, or the packet will be discarded by the next router.
I believe this is incorrect. Every reference I have looked at (including Unix Network Programming by Stevens) states that the IP checksum field is the checksum of the header only. If it is indeed the checksum of the entire datagram, please provide a reference or something. --StatsJunkie 19:43, 21 January 2007 (UTC)
