[edit] Things to add

What about the famous OleoMargerine scandal?
Also Iowa State was one of the first places to refine Uranium in the U.S.
The Greenlee School of Journalism is now a major endowed entity. How to include?

There are couple of notable athletes from my era as an undergraduate that deserve recognition: gymnast Ron Galimore and wrestler Nate Carr. They are both Olympians and I believe are members of the University's athletic Hall of Fame. Maybe a link to a Hall of Fame site would be a good way include athletic notables.

I think the fact that Iowa was the first state to accept the terms of the Morril Act, making Iowa State the first land-grant university in the nation should be included.

[edit] New contributions

Some good contributions to the article, it's really improving. I hid some of the items by putting them in HTML comments. It is certainly important that the page continues to improve, but I think we can accomplish it without making the page appear to be under construction. --Ben Brockert 02:46, Nov 30, 2004 (UTC)

Thanks. In thinking over the, now "Other notable names" section I think it'd be best to link each building, etc. to a single article (e.g., ISU notables#Atanasoff Hall). The down side is that fully filled out with pictures and text it would be a massive page. Maybe two articles: A-M; N-Z (or wherever the median letter would be). Thoughts?

Cburnett 02:55, 30 Nov 2004 (UTC)

It is much easier to split a large article in two than to consolidate a large number of small articles. So yes, I think it would be a good idea to start with a single page listing all of the items, and then split them off individually as they get large enough to justify their own article. Are you planning to do it by building, or by person? --Ben Brockert 03:00, Nov 30, 2004 (UTC)
I guess by name. So that would include Marston Hall, Marston court (road between Sweeney & Hoover), and Marston street (couple blocks west of Duff) all under Marston's name. That seems to make the most sense. So something like this perhaps:

[edit] Marston's full name

[edit] Marston Hall

Picture, when it was built, what's in it, etc.

[edit] Marston Court

Where it's at

[edit] Marston Street

Where it's at

Makes sense to me. Go for it! --Ben Brockert 23:09, Nov 30, 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Infobox

Created and changed to a new template for the infobox. The page code looks much nicer and modifiable. :) Cburnett 18:47, 5 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Well done. I knew there must be a template for it, but I didn't find it with a cursory search. I sized it down a bit; I know it makes the text inside the seal harder to read, but otherwise it takes up half the page width. --Ben Brockert 19:09, Dec 5, 2004 (UTC)
Your search returned nothing because there was nothing....or so I didn't find either. I don't like the new size as it wraps "Undergraduate", wraps Geoffroy, wraps campus description, and website link is pushing the boundary of the box. I suppose it depends on what resolution you're browsing at that determins how much width the box takes up but I'd go for a larger size where these things don't happen. Cburnett 19:15, 5 Dec 2004 (UTC)
I'm browsing at 1024x768, which is above average. Are you using IE? It tends to make fonts larger. None of the text is wrapping for me at the size I'm using (running Firefox). Change it to whatever works. --Ben Brockert 19:27, Dec 5, 2004 (UTC)
Mozilla on linux, actually. I bumped it up 25 pixels and changed the template and the undergraduate bit bits now. That's fine with me, it was just too distracting with the line broken at the hyphen. Cburnett 19:41, 5 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Note for whomever (even me if I get around to it): Also should reupload a new seal that doesn't have the wasted white-space on the left and right. Cburnett 19:16, 5 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Well, I ran across Template:Infobox University2 on Cornell's page. It doesn't allow for color manipulation but that could be changed. *sigh* Cburnett 00:24, 6 Dec 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Chronology

As there is now an individual section detailing when each ISU president entered and left office, perhaps we could remove this information from the chronology table? I feel it really clutters up the chronology with superfluous information. Please respond to this idea here, if it meets no objections I will probably go ahead and do this in the next day or two. Adm58 23:41, Apr 4, 2005 (UTC)

Perhaps a real timeline is in order? Template:Timeline US Presidents 2
I'd rather they stayed but I'm all for finding a better way to present information... Cburnett 23:46, Apr 4, 2005 (UTC)
Like I said, the same info is already available a few lines up on the page. I think having it repeated in the chronology makes it hard to get to the new information available there.
I have no objection to a timeline similar to the one you linked, although I find the current Iowa State presidents section to be sufficient. I'll go ahead and remove this info from the chronology if that is alright. Adm58 23:50, Apr 4, 2005 (UTC)
My desire to leave that in is it shows the presidency in relation to other events. To see what happened during a presidents tenure would require first finding the dates of service above then going through the chronology to find the bounded dates. I guess delete them and we can reevaluate afterward...it's easy to put it back if necessary. Cburnett 00:12, Apr 5, 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Grant Wood state quarter

I personally feel this image is unrelated to the ISU article. The only relation Grant Wood has to ISU are the presence of his murals in the library. He actually has much more to do with the University if Iowa than with ISU.

A photograph of one of his murals would be much more pertinent (if photography of the murals is even allowed).

Anyways, I move to remove the image, but haven't yet done this myself as to allow time for discussion. --- adm58 (sig added by Cburnett)

Searching around, I can't find anything relating him to ISU except his paintings. I'd go for removing the quarter and his name from the page and putting him under ISU notables#Parks Library as having done the murals. Cburnett 00:10, Apr 5, 2005 (UTC)
Along these lines, perhaps we should rename the Alumni heading to something different. This section currently contains professors/deans/etc, while the term "alumni" applies only to students. Adm58 01:13, Apr 5, 2005 (UTC)
Well, former students specifically. Surely some of them are also alumni. Perhaps a list of alumni and a list of non-alumni? Cburnett 20:54, Apr 11, 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Space-grant university?

I've been here 6 years and can't name much of anything as to why ISU is a space-grant university. Compared to a school like U of Co @ Boulder, ISU isn't. Oh the things you can learn.... :) Cburnett 20:52, Apr 11, 2005 (UTC)

As an aerospace engineer here I can say with confidence we're a space-grant university because we have one of the largest and best aerospace programs in the nation. In fact I'm pretty sure our aerospace program is larger and rated higher than aerospace at Colorado. It also doesn't hurt that NASA is responsible for at least part of this program and they regularly give us millions of dollars to do research for them. Tweak13 03:01, Dec 6, 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Need some more

It would be nice to see some more information on the bands. There is a deep history in our bands and I think that is worth atleast a paragraph or two.

Go for it! I don't know the first thing to write about them. Cburnett 04:57, Apr 27, 2005 (UTC)

[edit] French Article

The link on the side to the French version links to University of Iowa, not Iowa State.

[edit] fixed the list of colleges

The list used preformatted text, because the image on the right causes bullet-point alignment issues. I edited it to use proper bullets and then moved the image of the campanille to the right of the page.

If anybody can fix the alignment, I liked the image on the left, too. Eco751 20:16, 4 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Statue of George Washington Carver

Just wondering if any could take a picture of that statue of George Washington Carver and maybe post for this and/or the article on George Washington Carver?

[edit] Please help!

I started Template:Iowa_State_University but it needs some serious TLC, I'm not terribly good at formatting stuff. Bassgoonist 17:29, 22 June 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Student life section

I'm planning on adding a student life section to this page, but would like some input on what should be included. I'm thinking demographics, organizations, residence/greek life, student media. Any suggestions? --Cjcbsn 17:15, 9 July 2007 (UTC)

I just added some things to student life. It could use cleaning and expansion, though. A better history and description of GSB and the Greek Community would help. Highlighting prominent student organizations, like the Medieval Fighting Club, would make sense. A section on student traditions, like Campaniling and not walking on the Zodiac, would also be appreciated. Rasamassen (talk) 20:06, 21 January 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Sesquicentennial

How can the school's sesquicentennial be in 2007 if it was established in 1856? Corvus cornix 18:40, 24 August 2007 (UTC)

Iowa Agricultural College and Model Farm was officially established on March 22, 1858. --Cjcbsn 17:51, 5 October 2007 (UTC)

[edit] VEISHA Riots

In the "Chronology" section, it lists the 2004 VEISHA riots. There were also riots in 1988, and in 1992. I'm going to add these previous riots, but perhaps all riot listings should be removed. Perhaps the riot info should be under the VEISHA page. 147.155.182.24 (talk) 23:58, 15 March 2008 (UTC)
