[edit] Extracurriculars

the extracurriculars section has been tagged for being unencyclopedic. Why? —Preceding unsigned comment added by IsaacSheff (talkcontribs)

You ask "Why?"... Answer: This is an encyclopedia, not the school newspaper, yearbook, or a personal blog. Would an encyclopedia contain statements like "The club's innermost secrets are passed down in the Book of Lore, known only to past and present leaders"? Would an encyclopedia report the names of the team members in a particular academic decathlon competition? (Hint: The answer to both questions is "NO.") At most, an encyclopedia article would list the principal clubs and identify major recognitions these clubs have received (citing reliable sources for the information, of course). --Orlady (talk) 02:28, 14 January 2008 (UTC)

You can't describe something without details. The points provided are meant to give the reader a sense of what it is like to be in these clubs, including what people are important to them. Wikipedia is the most detailed encyclopedia in the world, and it is not unreasonable for it to have more detailed articles than what you might find elsewhere.IsaacSheff (talk) 06:19, 25 January 2008 (UTC)

Except in rare circumstances (for example, a prestigious award or a criminal case in which the club is central), the inner workings of a high school club, the names of this year's officers, and even the name of the club advisor, would not be content for a global encyclopedia. Also, see the policy at WP:RS -- has a reliable secondary source written about the tradition of the club's Book of Lore? --Orlady (talk) 13:04, 25 January 2008 (UTC)

I still feel that if a club at a school chooses to describe itself in greater detail in an encyclopedia article, it is doing no harm. In the case of the Book of Lore, it is a self published source. I have read wikipedia's policy on this, and as it is in no way a controversial issue (the existence of said book, that is) I believe that is appropriate. I agree that something needs to be done to the extracurriculars. Many of the details concerning 'Academic Decathlon' are unnecessary. Also, it would be good to include a listing of more clubs (I assume there are more). Higgyrun3 (talk) 22:56, 6 February 2008 (UTC)
