[edit] Route description

Iowa Highway 196 begins at an intersection with US 71 and IA 175 east of Lake View. It heads directly northward for its entire route. East of Sac City, it meets US 20 where it then terminates.

[edit] History

IA 196 was designated on April 9, 1935 after US 71 was realigned; however, it did not replace any old parts of US 71. The designation of IA 196 was originally supposed to be a spur route between US 20 and Williams further to the east. The plan was for IA 196 to replace US 20 south of Williams, but this never happened despite being approved on October 28, 1930, and later scrapped on May 25, 1932.[1]
