[edit] Date problems

Britannica says he was born in 1816 and died May 4, 1897. Is this an issue of orthodox dates someone can resolve? Tfine80 04:55, 28 September 2005 (UTC)

I don't think there can be. The wrong year must have appeared first in an English site and from there it rapidly spread over the net. He was born on August 12, 1816. Now here there might be some issue of orthodox dates. Maybe this is old calendar, i.e. 10-11 days less than the new, Gregorian one. I don't know. But it's still 1816, not 1817. See, e.g.:

http://ro.wikipedia.org/wiki/12_august http://ro.altermedia.info/calendar/calendar-9-16-august_1536.html or even one from where I'm writing (well, on the other coast) http://romanians.bc.ca/modules/news/article.php?storyid=534/

This is also the year that is listed at the Romanian Academy's list of members.[1] bogdan | Talk 09:06, 28 September 2005 (UTC)

I changed it. It's 1816. I didn't add the date (August 12), since I believe we should also inscribe the date according to the Gregorian calendar. I know for example that Dostoyevsky was born on November 11 (October 30), 1821. So, there seems to have been 12 days between the Julian and the Gregorian calendar, which would make August 24 (August 12), 1816, Ghica's birthday. But I'm not sure that is correct. Maybe Bogdan can check that, if he's in Romania and has access to this kind of information.
