[edit] Pontic Greeks

Hi again! You changed the phrase in the infobox the rest of the Greeks into Greeks. I'm curious, do you consider Pontic Greeks a separate ethnic group, other from Greeks? - Sthenel (talk) 11:53, 26 November 2007 (UTC)

OK I put it back. Please, have a look if you want at the talk page of Super League Greece 2007-08, in the section about the results of the greek teams in Europe. - Sthenel (talk) 12:26, 26 November 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Revert war on Panathinaikos FC

Hummmpphhh. I hope you are aware that you too broke WP:3RR, so I really ought to be blocking you too. Somehow I can't bring myself to doing that, because the other guy's POV-pushing and ownership attitude was so blatant. But still, you shouldn't have let it come this far.

I strongly recommend you try and hold yourself to a 1R/day rule voluntarily, for the next few months. Fut.Perf. 14:09, 12 March 2008 (UTC)

[edit] PGG

Hi Aetopoulo! I saw your comment on the PGG talk page and wanted to say I had seen the news report myself and the youtube video but haven't yet located any English language sources. Have you had better luck? I did manage two locate two news reports by Alpha but they are both in Greek.

http://www.alphatv.gr/index.asp?a_id=90&news_id=28823 http://www.alphatv.gr/index.asp?a_id=90&news_id=28843

Xenovatis (talk) 19:27, 27 March 2008 (UTC)

I know, I didn't expect that either and have the (paranoid?)suspicion that the news getting out in the first place was probably a failure on the relevant governmental department tasked with keeping a lid on such finds, of which there must be several. Nonetheless it would help to include it in the article if an English language source is found, even one just reporting on the Alpha report. I wonder though what Repousi will make of this. Probably call it συνωστισμός στην εκκλησία, not enough pews etc...Xenovatis (talk) 15:12, 28 March 2008 (UTC)
I don't know if it's any help, but the turkish article is probably this one http://haber.mynet.com/sayfali/guncel/Samsun-da-toplu-mezar-bulundu/22Mart2008/A2203050/3. Unfortunately my Turkish is pretty poor and the only thing I can say is that it refers to the memories of someone's father about a church and the discovery of bones.--Giorgos Tzimas (talk) 20:13, 28 March 2008 (UTC)
Giorgo thanks alot for the link and the explanation. I tried to get a machine translation http://www.tranexp.com:2000/Translate/result.shtml but it didn't really elighten much.

Village azas Competition Aydn however , " here grave okay someone bilmiyordu but skimmer kazdkça cemetery çkt. This place historic or even if having a knob or round head one each cemetery possible. skeletleri comrade edge total competent visual saying , but someone coming " saying subject. Çocukluunda iskeletlerinin çkt on the ground church okay adverb ªehriye Ylmaz even if , " father here situated church ykt , instead of school yapt. This place cemetery , but someone owner çkmamas and earth slip with cemetery disappearance ºeklinde subject.

Still this is much better and hopefully eventually there will be an English language article about it in a mainstream news outlet. How did you learn Turkish btw? I can speak a few phrases but it's mostly touristy stuff. Thanks again.Xenovatis (talk) 22:12, 28 March 2008 (UTC)
I studied some in university, but I never actually learned the language. I dug up my dictionary today and the text says that a certain Sehriye Yilmaz (female name)speaks of a church with sceletons. The church was later turned into a school by her father (?). She adds that the place was a cemetery but it dissapeared because of land slides (?) since nobody cared for it. The insenuation is that this is no mass grave but a common christian church cemetery that went into disuse. The first four pages of the article give a detailed report of the discovery, but it's going to be very painstaking to translate them. A Turkish editor or a Greek competent in Turkish can surely do better than me--Giorgos Tzimas (talk) 07:47, 29 March 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Re:Sigantures

I went to Niko's signature shop and found a format that I liked, and then played around with the colours and the links. Alternatively, you can ask Niko to make you one and tell him how you want it done. BalkanFever 06:16, 3 April 2008 (UTC)

BTW, you changed your name wrong. You need to go to WP:CHU and ask them to do it for you. BalkanFever 06:17, 3 April 2008 (UTC)
Yeah. Either request for them to change the user name (get your old contributions transferred to your new name in page histories), or just go and register the new name and start editing from there. Note it's either-or: as soon as you've done the second, you can no longer do the first. Fut.Perf. 06:33, 3 April 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for the help guys.I followed both your advices.--Eagle of Pontus (talk) 09:08, 3 April 2008 (UTC)

Okay. Since the renaming might take a day or two, I've taken the freedom of moving your pages back to the old name for now, to avoid confusion. Don't worry, they'll be moved again once the renaming is done. Fut.Perf. 10:07, 4 April 2008 (UTC)

Ok no problem--Eagle of Pontus (talk) 15:00, 4 April 2008 (UTC)

- Sthenel (talk) 12:51, 12 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Pontiaka

You recently moved Pontic Greek to "Pontiaka". I moved it back, as Pontic Greek seems to be the normal English name for this language/dialect. If you disagree, please discuss on Talk:Pontic Greek to form a consensus. Thanks, --Macrakis (talk) 14:05, 25 April 2008 (UTC)

You say "Who defines a normal name?" -- for a topic like this, WP generally looks to the relevant English-language scholarly literature as well as popular usage (to the extent it exists). My impression is that "Pontic Greek" is the usual term in the scholarly literature (used, for example, by Brian Joseph and Tompaidis in English-language publications), but I'd be happy to see evidence either way on the relevant Talk page.

As for Arvanitika and Vlachika, it would of course be as ridiculous to call them "Arvanitic Greek" and "Vlachic Greek" as to talk about "Basque French" or "German Romanian" (for the language of the Transylvanian Saxons). --Macrakis (talk) 14:45, 25 April 2008 (UTC)

Most languages are named by bare adjectives (English, Japanese, etc.). This is of course usually ambiguous, so the article titles are English language, Japanese language, etc. That would be an argument for "Pontic Greek language", except that there is nothing else called "Pontic Greek" on WP. And again, WP doesn't decide what to name languages -- we go by the consensus of good usage. Perhaps someday English-language authors will start using "Pontiaka" the way they use "Arvanitika", but apparently this isn't the case today. --Macrakis (talk) 16:29, 25 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Cyprus

The article is obviously improved, but there are many things yet to be done. In order to have a "model article" read a FA country article, such as Canada or israel. Some suggestions:

  • The lead per WP:LEAD should be a summary of the whole article, so I am not sure if all the details of the third paragraph are needed. Read carefully the above link.
  • "A former British colony, it gained independence from the United Kingdom in 1960 and became a Commonwealth republic in 1961. The Republic of Cyprus is a developed country and has been a member of the European Union since 1 May 2004. It adopted the euro on 1 January 2008." I think some prose improvements are needed here, so that the prose flows better. But prose improvements will come after all the other improvements are done. When time comes, I can suggest some copy-editors, and there is always the Wikipedia:WikiProject League of Copyeditors.
  • Do not overwikify the text. When you linke an article once, it is OK.
  • Be consistent in the way you link sources, using the proper templates (Template:cite book, Template:cite web, Template:cite journal, and Template:cite news).
  • Citations go after the punctuation. You are not consistent.
  • Have at least one citation at each paragraph. In "History" for instance i see some uncited paragraphs.
  • " Hamam Omerye, initially the church of St. Mary". Avoid external jumps like this one. Turn them into proper citations.
  • "Throughout the Venetian rule, the Ottoman Empire frequently raided Cyprus. In 1539 the Ottomans destroyed Limassol. Fearing the worst, the Venetians fortified Famagusta, Nicosia, and Kyrenia." Choppy prose.
  • You could improve the structure of "History", having sub-sections, but respecting also WP:SS; History of Cyprus is the main article, and the section of Cyprus should be a summary of it.
  • "Turmoil on the island was met with force by the British who started openly favouring Turks in police and administration as part of a divide and conquer policy." Uncited, and I am afraid that in WP:FAC or WP:GAC this could be regarded as POV. Cite it and try to have also the British view on the issue.
  • Always respecting [{WP:SS]], I think some brief mentioning of Zürich and London Agreement is needed.
  • "In 2004, there was a referendum on the adoption of the Annan Plan for Cyprus[17], but whilst it was accepted by the north, it was rejected by the Greek-Cypriots as they felt that it meant endorsing a confederal state with a weak central government and considerable local autonomy."n Is there any reason to mention the Greek reasoning? It seems like apologizing. I think just the facts (North accepted, south rejected).
  • "In July 2006 the island served as a safe haven for people fleeing Lebanon due to the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah.[18]" Try to avoid stubby paragraphs like this one. Merge or expand.
  • "Geography" is uncited. For such sections see a FA country article, and follow their example.
  • "Government" is also uncited.
  • "the social-democratic EDEK and the centrist EURO.KO". Is EUROKO still existing?
  • "The constant focus on the division of the island can sometimes mask other human rights issues." The prose looks to me a bit uncyclopedic.
  • Make sure that your data in "Economy" are updated.
  • "and Cypriot universities (University of Cyprus) ignore". Another external jump.
  • "Art" is tagged and stubby. "Media" and "Telecommunications" also stubby. I would expand it just a bit or merge it with another sub-section.
  • "Healthcare" is listy. Proper prose is needed.
  • I don't like the prose of "Transportation". Is "motorways" a separate subsection?
  • "International membership" is also stubby. It needs some expansion, and analysis.

It is up to you to do whatever you want with the above review, and place it wherever you want.--Yannismarou (talk) 11:20, 30 April 2008 (UTC)

Επιφυλάσσομαι για τα άλλα άρθα!--Yannismarou (talk) 11:20, 30 April 2008 (UTC)

  • Well, in case you want to upgrade the article to GA status, what you do may be OK, but, in case you decide to go some time for FA status, then you'll have to go through the citations, fix their layout, and proof-read them. Τα λέμε!--Yannismarou (talk) 17:07, 30 April 2008 (UTC)

Hello John I am editor LoveMonkey. I wondering about getting a couple of articles created in Greek. Also what is the current take on the black swan theory there, (if there is a take at all). LoveMonkey (talk) 19:30, 5 June 2008 (UTC)
