Inwood Forest, Houston, Texas

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Inwood Forest is a community of 1,200 homes in near-northwest Houston, Texas. The surrounding ares associated with Inwood Forest include Oaks of Inwood and Inwood North.

The community's landmark was the now defunct Inwood Forest Country Club, a private golf course on Antoine Drive. It is bordered by Acres Homes which is immediately to the east of Inwood Forest and Oaks of Inwood. A collection of apartment complexes serve as a counterbalance to the middle class housing in the area, starting just north of Antoine and Pinemont and concentrating through Tidwell, De Soto, Little York and Gulf Bank on Antoine Drive. It is located within a 30 minute commute from Downtown Houston, the Houston Galleria, and George Bush Intercontinental Airport.[1]

It was formerly considered a mostly White middle-class suburban area just within/around the city limits. Inwood is now a primarily African American neighborhood (65%), however the remaining population ranges between White, Hispanic and Asian. There is a diverse population of retired professionals still living in Inwood Forest and as a result it is protected by one of the most active Community on Patrol groups in the state known as IFCOP. However, this is evident only in the immediate area around the Country Club. For the most part, among its young and mostly non-White residents and residents of Acres Homes, Inwood is considered the nice part of Acres Homes.

Julie Grothues, president of the Inwood Forest Community Improvement Association, said in a 2008 Houston Chronicle article that she saw children playing in the streets of Inwood Forest while she did not see any in 1978.[1]
