[edit] Use of images on user page

Hi. I noticed you are using some cover images from video games on your user page. Please note that this not allowed under fair use copyright law. As the policy page Wikipedia:Fair use details, while it's okay to put freely-reusable images on your user page, you cannot do the same with copyrighted images (such as video game covers, album covers, film screenshots, etc). These can only be used on articles that discuss the things in question (so for example, the Animal Crossing cover is only to be used on articles about Animal Crossing). I know it sounds odd, and it is rather complicated, but you must remove these images from your user page. Thank you. If you have any questions, leave a message on my talk page and I'll help out. ~Matticus TC 19:49, 9 August 2006 (UTC)

Okay, it's been a couple of days and you hadn't removed the images from your user page, so I've done it for you. Please note that copyrighted images generally must not be used outside of the articles they are intended for. The specific paragraph from WP:FAIR is as follows:
9. Fair use images should be used only in the article namespace. Used outside article space, they are often enough not covered under the fair use doctrine. They should never be used on templates (including stub templates and navigation boxes) or on user pages. They should be linked, not inlined, from talk pages when they are the topic of discussion. This is because it is the policy of the Wikimedia Foundation to allow an unfree image only if no free alternative exists and only if it significantly improves the article it is included on. All other uses, even if legal under the fair use clauses of copyright law, should be avoided to keep the use of unfree images to a minimum. Exceptions can be made on a case-by-case basis if there is a broad consensus that doing so is necessary to the goal of creating a free encyclopedia (like the templates used as part of the Main Page).
If you have any questions about fair use of images, or any other queries, don't hestitate to leave a message on my talk page. Thank you. ~Matticus TC 22:21, 11 August 2006 (UTC)
