Ever since the end of WWII, the UN wanted to form a homeland to the Jews. They went through such torture during the Holocaust, and this gave the Jewish community their own place. The homeland would be what part of Palestine used to be. Of course, this angered the Palestinians because they refused to share their country. On Friday May 14, 1948, the British Mandate over Palestine expired. Also on that date, the Declaration of the Establishment of the State of Israel was signed by members of the National Council at the Tel Aviv museum. These members represented the Jewish community and Zionist movement. Zionism is a political international movement that supported the reestablishment of a Jewish homeland. The declaration went into effect at midnight. After the declaration was signed, President Truman responded eleven minutes later with recognition of the state of Israel by the United States.

The state of Israel is a very influential power in the Middle East. This is a major deal for allies such as the U.S. They have the support of their allies. Israel is in a very influential position. It is in the Middle East, and would make a very beneficial area to set up a base if need be. In addition, the Israel Lobby, a political group, is very influential today. That is also another main reason the U.S. supports Israel so avidly. Although not all Jewish Americans are part of the Lobby, there are still a substantial number. Jewish Americans have set up a striking display of organizations to influence American foreign policy, of which AIPAC is the most powerful and best known. This creates a very influential power that affects many decisions. With foreign policy being influenced like this, the allies of the U.S. are also supporting Israel. This is a huge power, and to keep Israel on the side that benefits the U.S. the most, the U.S. is willing to do almost anything to make sure Israel is protected.
