Invercargill Airport (IATA: IVCICAO: NZNV) is a controlled aerodrome located 1 NM northwest of Invercargill at the south of the South Island of New Zealand. During the mid 1950s, Invercargill Airport was used as an American base for Operation Deep Freeze. Large planes destined for McMurdo Sound in the Antarctic used the airport, assisted in takeoff by JATO rockets under their wings.
