Vandal

I found some vandalism on the "Related Articles" section. Don't worry, I erased it. Can't those vandals find something better to do? johnny's pizza 01:35, 13 February 2007 (UTC)

Wiki screenshot

Why isn't there a wiki screenshot yet? Can we get one soon?--User:NFAN3|NFAN3 03:00, 24 December 2006 (UTC)

  • I have uploaded one and put it on the page. OptimumCoder 04:26, 24 December 2006 (UTC)

Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection?

Why would the Nintendo web browsers have to use the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection? Are we sure this isn't just some confusion of terms? The name Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection refers specifically to the Xbox Live-style networking service, and doesn't just mean "a Wi-Fi connection with Nintendo hardware". Wii also has the option of Ethernet connections via a USB adaptor, but it presumably still connects to the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection for gaming, even though it isn't really a Wi-Fi connection. If they indeed require the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection, and if web browsing on Nintendo consoles goes through Nintendo servers, there are some serious privacy concerns here. Dancter 04:59, 9 August 2006 (UTC)

I agree; I could have made that a bit more clear when writing it. I've clarified the wording a bit, let me know if it meets your approval. –Prototime (talkcontribs) 16:54, 9 August 2006 (UTC)

Not Free

According to Nintendo's site, here, the Wii Browser will be purchased with Wii Points, which presumably are not free. Hence the browser would not be free (which makes sense... as with DVD playback, not everyone wants to browse the 'net on their TV, so it cuts costs). Thus I think the article should be changed... —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Twile (talkcontribs) 17:05, 14 September 2006 (UTC)

You are free to make those changes yourself. No need to waste time and process mentioning it on the talk page unless there's an ongoing dispute; there's too much work to be done on these articles with all the new information. Thank you for heads-up, by the way. I knew those other sources were too ambiguous to prove that the browser was free. Dancter 17:15, 14 September 2006 (UTC)
Just wanted to make sure there were no conflicts, as previous articles seemed to hint away from this (though didn't outright deny it). Also I don't know how to do citations. And I didn't sign my post, crap... >_> --Twile 17:32, 14 September 2006 (UTC)
For now, people are adding stuff so fast, I'm just adding simple HTML links to the end of statements when I add stuff, so I can keep up. But eventually we will want to clean up after ourselves, using footnotes with citation templates. Dancter 17:40, 14 September 2006 (UTC)
Added, thanks. Someone do a proper reference some time please :) --Twile 17:58, 14 September 2006 (UTC)

It costs zero points for the trial version. Zero points are free. You have unlimited zero points to spend. Jecowa 15:31, 22 December 2006 (UTC)

Widgets

According to Opera's financial presentation for Q2 2006, the Wii browser will support widgets: "For example, Widgets will be supported in Opera 9 for Nintendo Wii and Symbian Series 60." - is that what the following sentence in the article is referring to? "Opera Software has indicated that the functionality will allow for third parties to create web applications specifically designed for the use on the Wii Browser?" -Numbnumb 20:29, 14 September 2006 (UTC)

No, it is refering to the interview (see bottom of article). Scott Hedrick (Vice President with Opera for Devices) said "Based on Opera 9 for Devices, the Wii browser will be not only able to surf the full Internet, but execute Web applications using technologies such as AJAX. In addition to the ability to use advanced services such as Google Maps, third parties could theoretically develop Web applications specifically for the Wii." But it may be useful to add the part about widgets if it hasnt been already. 68.99.18.96 22:26, 26 September 2006 (UTC) (Eulergamma, im not signed in)

Available for download

One word: No. The source says until June 2006, not 2007. I think it should be removed from the article. --Twile 00:47, 15 September 2006 (UTC)

IGN made a typo. 1up has a [full story] on the Wii Browser, and they state clearly it will be free for download until June 2007. They site the official Japanese page. However, since it isn't on the English page, there is no way of knowing whether or not that deal will carry over to North America. 66.75.221.6 03:41, 15 September 2006 (UTC)

Please SIGN YOUR NAME (four ~ symbols in a row). At this point, given that the English page says you have to buy it with Wii Points, I'm inclined to go with that and shall revert it to that until someone can find an official statement otherwise. It could be mentioned if this is an official Japan-only deal. --Twile 03:57, 15 September 2006 (UTC)

Opera press release —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 70.26.91.139 (talk • contribs) . Edited for clarity: EVOCATIVEINTRIGUE TALKTOME | EMAILME 21:59, 26 September 2006 (UTC) Opera's recent statement (link above) stated that it will be free for download until June 2007. Whatever source you all are refering to might have had a typo.

Well, I can confirm that it's not yet available for download, free or otherwise, on the Wii yet.71.58.245.168 07:29, 20 November 2006 (UTC)

It is available for download now. Jecowa 15:32, 22 December 2006 (UTC)

Release Date

Where was the release date taken from? I can't find a source that explicitly states it will be released with the system. If I'm missing something, or if I'm just being stupid by not noticing it, please feel free to insult me in any way you see fit. --68.195.25.63 22:24, 26 September 2006 (UTC)

  • First of all, it is now November 19th. I have a Wii, and when I go to download the browser, it says, "We're planning to release the Internet Channel in the near future." No specific date has been set yet, and "near future" isn't that specific, but at least we know that the release date is not Nov. 19. -- 74.38.67.189 15:57, 19 November 2006 (UTC)

Three separate headings on the same topic? Come on. This isn't even a very long talk page; a quick and easy read. This was already covered in both the discussion above, and the article itself. Dancter 05:46, 27 September 2006 (UTC)
I know, but I found another link, and those guys keep arguing about a number typo. From what I know wikipedia is very stingy about everything, so here's another link.--Signor 06:07, 27 September 2006 (UTC)
I figured the Opera press release that 70.26.91.139 posted was enough, but alright. I don't think it was necessary to use a new topic heading, though. It tends to fragment discussion. Dancter 06:34, 27 September 2006 (UTC)

How much?

Does anyone know how much it costs after June 2007?

After 2007, it must be purchased via 'Wii points' and at this time, the cost of those is undisclosed
One point is one cent, though that still doesn't give us a price for the browser. Rlloyd3 03:21, 20 November 2006 (UTC)
well it says 500 points so that'd be $5

Nintendo Sweeden

According to nintendo Sweeden, the internet channel will be available the 8th of december [2] (If you speak Sweedish it is)

should i add this to the article? because i dont think i see it in there yet--70.130.38.205 00:01, 4 December 2006 (UTC)

Actually it says the Disc, Mii, Photo, and Shop channels will be available on the 8th. The internet channel will be around "soon after".Sockatume 07:31, 4 December 2006 (UTC)

23rd? I think not

The site linked to there doesn't provide a press release, link, or other citation for their information. However I think they're confusing the Internet Channel (browser) with the internet-based Weather Channel, which was confirmed for the 23rd of December some time ago. Sockatume 11:48, 7 December 2006 (UTC)

-Yeah, that would make sense, but perhaps they both release the same day, because maybe it might be a server thing?--70.130.38.205 19:02, 10 December 2006 (UTC)

Weather Channel was released 19th December though. Makar1 11:19, 21 December 2006 (UTC)

Wii Browser/Internet Channel

While I agree that "Wii Browser" is an accurate description of this feature, Nintendo's official name for it is "Internet Channel". See these official Nintendo pages for proof. http://wii.nintendo.com/wiimenu.jsp http://us.wii.com/wiichannel_gallery.jsp I would suggest that this page be renamed "Internet Channel". 74.38.67.189 12:57, 9 December 2006 (UTC)

Seconded, I'll sort out a page move request some time this week. Sockatume 03:05, 11 December 2006 (UTC)

Hmm...well, it seems to me that the Internet Channel is simply the channel on the menu that contains the Wii Browser, which would be the actual browser itself. I'd suggest further clarification.

66.178.141.175 01:54, 15 December 2006 (UTC)

Requested move

Wii BrowserInternet Channel (Wii) — The "Internet Channel" name is the official name of this function of the console, as observed by another editor on the talk page. Not particularly controversial but the number of link changes involved, and the not-particularly-serious reason for the move, might be reason to leave the article alone Sockatume 21:02, 12 December 2006 (UTC)

Release date TBA?

Just an observation. For some reason, the article states that there is an estimated release date, but there doesn't seem to be any release date stated in the box template. Is this on purpose, or just something that was overlooked? Jeri-kun 23:29, 16 December 2006 (UTC)

http://www.opera.com/products/devices/nintendo/

They say Dec 22....

This article backs that date up [3]. It also states "This trial version is a beta of sorts, as the final version of the browser will be available at the end of March 2007" and "the browser will be sold for 500 Wii Points". BeefJeaunt 17:30, 19 December 2006 (UTC)

Beta

It seems that Nintendo of Europe and Opera's press releases refer to it as a "trial version", while the Nintendo of America press release calls it a Beta version. While I really doubt it's a beta version of the software in the technical sense (there's a distinction between a limited-functionality demo version of software, as seen on PC mag covers, and a beta, for example of Firefox, which is typically somewhat bug-laden), I'm happy to leave the wording as "Beta" for the time being. Sockatume 06:25, 20 December 2006 (UTC)

It's called the trial version on the American download page in the Wii Shop channel. Jecowa 15:27, 22 December 2006 (UTC)

There should be a list that shows what the browser is capable of. So far I have found that SVG as well as RSS (and Atom) feeds work with the browser, although editing Wiki articles doesn't work (it clears the text field when editing). OptimumCoder 04:48, 24 December 2006 (UTC)

That's funny... It works fine for me... That's how I'm on now... Another thing, The listed "bug" about the 2 button is Not true... Bugs Already?

I don’t think there should be a section on bugs this early on in the browser’s life. I deleted the "One of the bugs in the software is when you click on "Set to homepage" or "Add to favorites" button, the whole thing freezes for about 10 seconds, and then goes back." statement. I have used the browser many times and never experienced this problem. I also got rid of the "Also when you press 2 (to change the view) most of the text overlaps each other, and makes it very difficult to read." statement. I even tested this out by going to Wikipedia and no such bug occurred even after performing the action several times. The only bug I experienced which had been listed was the one which happens during pop-ups. There is a good possibility that such bugs are widespread, though. But I don’t think they should be stated in Wikipedia until reports start circulating. BeefJeaunt 05:47, 24 December 2006 (UTC)

Please report bugs and other issues found in the Wii forum at my.opera.com (http://my.opera.com/community/forums/forum.dml?id=2081) - Wilhelmja (QA, Opera Software) 08:31, 26 December 2006 (UTC)

Yeah, um...

This has nothing to do with the article, it's actually just a question I have, but...can you play Runescape with it?

No, it doesn't support Java. Runescape is stupid anyway.
Personally I'm not a big fan of that kind of thing either (runescape i mean), but whomever said this, please don't attack other users interests. Each unto his own. (sorry to get offtopic, just thought I'd say that)

Support for free web games

I don't have a Wii, yet, so I can't test this. Could someone use the Internet Channel and surf here: http://www.gagaplay.com/jemu2/games.php Clicking a 'Play!' should launch JEmu2 Java application. Then a large number of arcade games from various sources can be played. Just wondering if this also works on the Internel Channel. If it does, that would enable us to play these games for free. The MSX games (I've tried Eggerland and Penguin adventure) are controlled by the arrow keys. Hopefully they are mapped to the D-key on the Wii remote. On an aside is it useful to list (somewhere) websites that offer Wii-playable web games? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Mausy5043 (talkcontribs) 11:05, 25 December 2006 (UTC). The Wii can play videos on youtube so whoever posted that is wrong. I have a Wii and every video I have played on Youtube works fine of the Wii Internet Channel. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 71.168.39.246 (talk) 16:10, 25 December 2006 (UTC).

sorry to say this but I think we need to undo all of that guy's edits, because it sounded very bad, I dont think the article should say things like "it seems to me YouTube doesnt work, but many, many people think it works" or one-sided things like that, but maybe something like "YouTube only sometimes works on the Wii Browser, perhaps due to some flash issues"70.130.41.121 21:15, 25 December 2006 (UTC)

I sometimes have problems with flash on my Wii, but after an exit and reenter, it works fine... Lamename3000 03:22, 26 December 2006 (UTC)

in my experience, YouTube works variabley - videos loaded in the "old style" YouTube player seem to work fine, while those in the shiny "new style" one don't.--Avapoet 09:02, 10 January 2007 (UTC)

Alternatives?

Is the alternatives section really necessary, when that was before the IC was released? It just seems out of place... I mean, your not going to be able to force the Wii onlinr without IC... that section needs to be deleted... Lamename3000 03:24, 26 December 2006 (UTC)

I went ahead and removed it myself... I really don't think it's a problem because it was obselete info from before the Channels actual release.. I mean "Internet Channel leaving people wanting more"? That is wrong, as nobody KNEW what IC looked like until it's release... Lamename3000 03:37, 26 December 2006 (UTC)

Full Version will be released on March 30

Accrding to IGN (http://wii.ign.com/index/release.html) it says that the Full version of the Intenet Channel will be available on March 30. I'm gonna add this to the article. Munchlax 18:32, 13 January 2007 (UTC)

It seems that IGN has removed the date of the Full Version of the Opera Browser out of the list, therefore, March 30th may not be the date. I'm gonna remove March 30 at the article since we dont have evidence that will be released on the 30th. Munchlax 21:33, 8 February 2007 (UTC)

Bookmarkes

I have noticed that the bookmarks on the Internet Channel are not live, as mentioned in this article. Wii Porn

First porn site dedicated for wii users so they can watch porn on the wii. The site was the first one to be released. It's predicted that many will follow wiisex.net. I guess it was a matter of time considering the huge amounts of porn that is currently out for portable devices such as the sony psp.(pspsex.net) One advantage of porn on the wii is that you can watch it from the comforts of your couch. One hand for the remote and the other one is free for whatever. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Mitx (talkcontribs) 04:06, 6 February 2007 (UTC).

Yeah, and they'll most likely be able to find your site by other means. As far as the link goes from here, it is irrelevent. The Wii is a web browser that is no different than a browser on a computer, or a cell phone. The link in regards to Wikipedia lacks informational content, and is considered spam. --wL<speak·check·chill> 09:09, 6 February 2007 (UTC)
First, It's not my site. It's not irrelevant. The Wii webrowser is not different than a pc browser. But the wii is different from a pc. Otherwise why do you have a section for wii? You could just say it's no different from a pc in that they both play games. It plays different content. Its a different platform. I can't run have the video on my pc on my wii. I found a site that was geared towards providing wii users with porn that works on their wii interesting. Much like when the Mobile Porn industry first came out, porn sites cropped up. The sites are dedicated to those portable devices. They guaranty compatibility. Much like the new generation of wii porn. I find that to be very informative. The site is also none-profit. No ads, no affiliates. No membership. So there is nothing to spam. I feel it's just as valid as every other site on that external links list. Maybe you should get your facts straight before spamming your ignorance and moral judgments. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Mitx (talkcontribs).
Before I reply, may I please advise you to go at this in a civil way, and sign your posts by typing ~~~~ at the end of them? It may help you when communicating with people here at Wikipedia. If you remember, the Wii was not the first console based browser that was widely used, so the concept of viewing porn on a console is not new. in terms of Wikipedia guideline, it doesn't matter if the site makes money or not. It would be different if it were a report on porn and how it will affect the Wii; that's what I meant by informative. --wL<speak·check·chill> 10:27, 6 February 2007 (UTC)

I disagree with you 100%. You are not looking at it objectively. In fact you are using a personal opinion and passing it off as fact. Firstly there is a section talking about youtube working on wii. What is the significance of youtube playing on a browser? Does it say anything about affecting the wii? Cell phones are not the first browser neither but porn for cell phones and mobile devices will reach over 2billion dollars by 2010. There is even a section about it on this site. I also see you have a history of jumping the gun and erasing peoples user names.Mitx 18:39, 6 February 2007 (UTC)mitx

I guess you changed the focus of the Wii porn article to include reliable sources. In regards to YouTube, that is correct, as youtube is Flash powered. We've covered that any flash enabled site can work with the Internet Channel, so it's been deleted. Also, don't bring unrelated issues into this. That is disruption. --wL<speak·check·chill>

Trial after Full is released?

The way that the Trial version is described in the Wii Ware on the Shop Channel, I think that there may be a possibility that Nintendo keeps the Trial version available for free and then charges $5 for the advanced regular full version. Is this possible that's what will happen? I think that may be a good idea and a bad idea. Good idea that people who are unsure whether or not it's worth it or not, but then it's bad because why bother paying $5 if you get it for free? Just thought we could think about that. Anyone have any comments? (Darn Bot archived this. Not yet!!) Lamename3000 01:09, 10 April 2007 (UTC)
This is irrelevant to Wikipedia. Until Nintendo announces such a move, it is nothing but speculation. Which means that it has no place in an Encyclopedic article. Jbanes 15:44, 10 April 2007 (UTC)
Like I said, I know that. I wanted to know if it makes any sense to do that, since it is getting very close to when the final version should be released. If they DO do it like I hope they do, then the article would have to undergo a major adjustment. I wanted some comments, and that way we can be prepared for if anything like that happens, not "We should add that into the article under a speculation." Lamename3000 17:48, 10 April 2007 (UTC)
We should NOT add this as speculation, as there isn't even a source for it being speculative. Nor is this the correct forum for discussing such speculation. (Consider visiting many of the Wii fan forums.) And if you want my honest opinion, there is zero point zero zero chance of this happening. Jbanes 18:37, 10 April 2007 (UTC)
I never said anything about adding anything to the article. I just am trying to get a discussion going about this. And there is not a "0.0%" chance of this happening, as it is possible they keep a dumbed down version of the Channel. I am not trying to mess with the article, just getting some comments. I think it is appropriate to discuss here, as if it happens, then it will have a major impact on this article.Lamename3000 22:17, 10 April 2007 (UTC)
Ok, so they didn't do anything like I guessed they might. Oh well.. Still doesn't mean you should act like a jerk about it. Lamename3000 02:41, 12 April 2007 (UTC)
With all due respect, I have not been "acting like a jerk". I have been blunt about it, but that is all. As I said, this discussion is unrelated to the Wikipedia article. Wikipedia is not a speculation forum or a crystal ball. It is a site for verifiable facts. If you wanted an open discussion about this possibility, you should have taken it to an appropriate web forum. (As I suggested.)
However, you did make a straightforward request for my opinion. I was trying to be polite by giving it to you. As you can see, my opinion was on the money. Lastly, you were the one who mention adding it to a speculation section. Those were not my words you quoted. Jbanes 15:16, 12 April 2007 (UTC)
I suggest you re-read everything I said, as I can not find where I said "Let's add this to a speculation section in the actual article!" Lamename3000 17:42, 12 April 2007 (UTC)

Not just the cursor

Some games made for the Wii actually uses the directional buttons. Homestarrunner.com made a game (only accessible from a Wii) called Duck Guardian. The buttons can be used to switch weapons such as Jump Ray and Turn Ray. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 76.177.164.96 (talk) 14:36, 15 April 2007 (UTC).

Adobe Flash compatibility?

Does this article need something on Flash compatibility? Due to Adobe not licensing anything newer than the Flash 7 SDK, the Wii browser doesn't have a more recent version, which breaks a few pages that require Flash 8 or higher. More info in the Wii browser forum. --Numbnumb 17:36, 13 April 2007 (UTC)

What's particularly ironic is that the Flash game Chick-Chick-Boom! that Nintendo released over Easter (2007), and that they encouraged users to play via the Wii Internet Channel, uses a newer Flash version than the browser supports, and can't as such be played on Wii. That's certainly worth mentioning, I think. Kelvingreen 16:09, 16 April 2007 (UTC)

Stop changing the date back to the 11th!

It came out on the 12th. See the official press release! http://press.nintendo.com/articles.jsp?id=11946

Um, ok.. whomever you are... Allow me to interject something.. I am not the one who is changing the date, but I think that it SHOULD stay at April 11th, press release or not. I have a mail-message on my Wii on the 11th that announced the Internet channel. So just because Nintendo didn't announce it to non-Wii people until the 12th, doesn't mean it didn't come out before. Nintendo of America is based in Redmond, Washington. Same time zone as me. I got the mail at about 5pm on April 11th, so doesn't that, and the fact that I downloaded it on the 11th, mean that 11th is the official date? Thank you, I shall be making an edit to the article to fix it to say the 11th, like whomever it was was trying to. Next time you want to disagree with an edit, create an account. When will Java support be added?

Is there any information about when Java support will be added to the Wii Browser? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 69.113.221.143 (talk) 13:25, 21 April 2007 (UTC).

New picture needed

It seems that the picture on the Internet Channel page is not showing a correct browser. It looks like the person who edited the image just replaced the bottom of the old image with the new browser bar and stretched. We need a new picture that displays the correct browser. OptimumCoder 23:46, 17 April 2007 (UTC)

I can not tell that. It looks fine. Also the Final release date is listed there properly, so I'd assume that it is a new, full picture. That makes me believe that the picture is legitimate. However, the whole picture is way too blurry, so I'd recommend an updated, clearer picture. But I don't think the current image is a hack. Lamename3000 00:12, 18 April 2007 (UTC)
The problem as far as I can see is that the new version of the browser is being used to look at a Wikipedia page for the Internet Channel that features a picture of the old version of the browser. While this infinite-recursion thing is a good joke, it pains me to say that it's probably more hassle and confusion than it's worth, and maybe a picture showing a different website might be better?--PaulTaylor 11:50, 18 April 2007 (UTC)
Yes. Lamename3000 16:25, 18 April 2007 (UTC)

The one reason I still believe it is a hack is the size of the bottom bar (with the action buttons) is larger than the bar in the other images (and on the Wii) I have seen. Compare the modified original with the current image in use. Plus the only way to get the image looking like infinity is most likely the use of a hack image. OptimumCoder 07:12, 22 April 2007 (UTC)

Full Java?

Can it display real Java things like applets? Or only Java script? 84.58.157.53 13:00, 5 June 2007 (UTC)

Only Javascript. Java Applets are not currently supported by the Internet Channel. Jbanes 16:52, 5 June 2007 (UTC)

Opera Widgets

I removed the statment that Opera will bring widget support to the Wii. This claim is untrue, purely rumor. The cited reference simply states (on one page) that Widgets were going to be added to the Opera for Devices SDK. To the author: let's remember that facts need to be actual facts, not interpretations of facts. For reference, I'm archiving the mentioned statement. lunisneko(talk) 03:45, 1 September 2007 (UTC)

, and it will support [[Widget engine|Widgets]], standalone web-based applications using Opera as an application platform.<ref name="Widgets">{{cite web| url=http://www.opera.com/company/investors/finance/2006/2Q06_presentation.pdf| title=Second Quarter 2006 Financial Presentation| publisher=Opera Software }}</ref>

Ahem. It turns out that the statement was indeed accurate, since the latest IC update does support Widgets. And how exactly can you interpret the following to mean "Opera for Devices SDK"? Page 31: "Widgets will be supported in Opera 9 for Nintendo Wii" -Numbnumb 19:44, 30 October 2007 (UTC)
