Talk:International Association of Classification Societies

I merged content from the "Iacs" article as it was a duplicate of this article. I am not an expert on classification societies, so additional editing may be necessary. The reference to CRS was ommitted from the "Iacs" article as it appears it is no longer an associate of the IACS.
Perhaps the introductory paragraph merged in from the "Iacs" article may be sufficient to remove the "insufficient context" tag. RadioTheodric (talk) 13:53, 30 April 2008 (UTC)
The following content was in the Talk page for Iacs (I did not write it). It seems appropriate to move it here. Perhaps someone can merge this into the main article: RadioTheodric (talk) 13:59, 30 April 2008 (UTC)
moved from classification society: The International Association of Classification Societies (IACS) based in London, UK represents 10 of the most famous societies. IACS was formed by seven leading societies on 11 September 1968. Current members are ABS, BV, CCS, DNV, GL, KR, LR, NK, RINA and RS. The Indian Register Of Shipping is the only remaining associate member, as this grade is being phased out. The Croatian Register of Shipping was an associate member of IACS until the end of 2004, and the associate membership of the Polish Register of Shipping was suspended in 2000.
IACS was given consultative status with International Maritime Organization (IMO), and remains the only non-governmental organisation with observer status which is able to develop and apply rules. The status of the standards developed by member societies was enshrined in the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS).
