Interstitial spaces
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
An interstitial space is that which occurs between two other things which acts to mitigate between them. A simple theoretical example is the front porch on a single-family home. The porch is not strictly public, nor strictly private, but acts as a buffer between the public and the private realms. A technical example is a construction assembly between the interior and exterior of a building which creates a micro-climate between the two helping to decrease the amount of energy to heat or cool a building
An interstitial space is a small or narrow area that occurs between other things and is generally overlooked and undesigned. This also includes those spaces whose functional and ideological role has been marginalised because of the way these areas relate to urban development. An example of an interstitial space is the ceiling of a room.
