Interstate 459 (abbreviated I-459) is the 3-digit bypass loop of Interstate 59 that creates a southern beltway in Jefferson County, Alabama, through the suburbs of Birmingham. The route is 32.8 miles long, and was completed in 1984. There are plans on board to extend it north of Birmingham to complete the beltway called the Northern Beltline, tentatively designated as State Route 959. Due to the northern beltline's expected junction with I-59 near Argo, it may be designated as Interstate 259 rather than Interstate 459. It is expected that the Northern Beltline will not be completed until 2020.
I-459 bypasses Birmingham. The route begins at its southern terminus near Bessemer with two lanes in either direction. Between Exit 6 (Morgan Road) and Exit 13 (U.S. Highway 31), there is a third lane in either direction. Work completed in 2002 added two more lanes in either direction between US-31 and Interstate 65 (Exit 15). Between I-65 and I-59 near Trussville, the route is made up of three lanes in either direction.
