In the state of Tennessee, Interstate 40 runs from Memphis to Great Smoky Mountains National Park by way of Nashville and Knoxville. Interstate 40 travels across Tennessee for 455 miles (730 km), allowing the driver to see most of Tennessee's physiographical provinces, from the Mississippi Embayment along the Mississippi River in West Tennessee, to the Highland Rim and Nashville Basin of Middle Tennessee, to the Cumberland Plateau and Appalachian Valley and Ridge Province in East Tennessee.

[edit] History
In Memphis, I-40 was originally intended to go through the city's Overton Park toward downtown. Several miles of interstate were actually built within the I-240 loop; this portion of highway still exists and is in regular use as Sam Cooper Boulevard, reaching the eastern end of Chickasaw Country Club. Environmentalist opposition, combined with a victory in the United States Supreme Court by opponents of the Overton Park route (see Citizens to Preserve Overton Park v. Volpe) forced abandonment of the original plans, and the road never reached the park. For over 20 years, I-40 signage existed on the dead-end route toward Overton Park. Eventually, the northern portion of the I-240 loop was redesignated as I-40.
On January 18, 2008, the Federal Highway Administration authorized the states of Mississippi and Tennessee to extend I-69 from the I-40/TN 300 interchange in north Memphis to the I-55/I-69 interchange in Hernando, Mississippi; however, Tennessee has not yet signed the extension of the route, although Mississippi has already done so.[1]
[edit] SmartFix 40
As of May 2008, a section of I-40 through downtown Knoxville near the Malfunction Junction is completely closed to all traffic for about 18 months for a massive reconstruction. Through traffic is required to use Interstate 640 or to use surface streets. The section is currently four lanes wide and quite substandard and congested, with many accidents.[2].
[edit] Future
The Tennessee Department of Transportation officially announced the I-40/I-81 Corridor Feasibility Study on July 27, 2007.[3] The intent of this study is to assess deficiencies along I-40 & I-81 in Tennessee and to develop upgrade proposals for the existing corridor.[4] This study will be completed in 2008.
