Interstate 189 (abbreviated I-189) is the only spur on the entire length of Interstate 89. The highway runs approximately 1.5 miles, from Exit 13 of I-89 to U.S. Route 7, entirely in South Burlington. The highway is a busy route to a commercial district along Shelburne Road as well as a connector between Interstate 89 and points along the western side of Vermont south of Burlington. I-189 is signed as east-west, although only one sign is posted on the highway, on the westbound side after the onramp from US-7.
Future plans include a new two-lane road connecting Interstate 189 to downtown Burlington.
[edit] History
There were at one time more plans for the highway.[citation needed] It was to continue North into the city of Burlington along the waterfront and service an industrial area. Construction was delayed due to the presence of a toxic barge canal and eventually cancelled as the city largely left behind its industrial past in favor of tourism in the 1980s. Roadway was abandoned just beyond the Route 7 interchange. As a result,Jersey barriers are in place directing traffic on I-189 east onto the Route 7 offramp, while there is much unused roadway to the west.
[edit] Exit list
There are currently only two interchanges on the short interstate, one at each end. Neither is numbered.
