Interstate 172 (abbreviated I-172) is a spur route off of Interstate 72 (abbreviated I-72). The highway runs north from its start outside of Hannibal, Missouri to just two miles west of Fowler, Illinois. At U.S. Highway 24, Interstate 172 becomes Illinois Route 336, which runs north to Carthage, Illinois. The entire portion of I-172 and I-72 from I-172 east to Springfield is also known by its former name, the Central Illinois Expressway.^[1] I-172 is 19.69 miles (31.69 km) long.^[2]

Interstate 172 is a four-lane freeway located entirely within the state of Illinois. It is also known as the Strieby Expressway.

Interstate 172 originally was what Interstate 72 is now from Hannibal, Missouri to the current interchange with I-172. This was approved by the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) on June 9, 1991.

On April 23, 1995, after a re-examination by the Federal Highway Administration, the highway to Hannibal was redesignated I-72, with the highway north to Quincy redesignated as Interstate 172. The highway is non-chargeable, meaning that even though it is an Interstate, it was not built with federal funds.^[3]

After Interstate 172 was completed, the Illinois Department of Transportation continued development of the four-lane highway as Illinois Route 336. Construction is ongoing (as of April 2008) just east of the Carthage area, where Illinois Route 336 bypasses the city of Carthage to the south and east and intersects with US 136 where it becomes a two-laned highway to Macomb until further construction is completed. A study is currently underway to extend Route 336 to Peoria. A bypass around Macomb is also expected, which would make the "Avenue of the Q's" (Quincy - Quad Cities via I-172, IL-336, US 136, US 67, and I-74) four lanes.
