International Year of the Child

The International Year of the Child was proclaimed in 1979 by the United Nations. The proclamation was meant to draw attention to problems that affected children throughout the world, including malnutrition and lack of access to education.

Numerous events took place within the UN and in member countries to mark the International Year of the Child.
- January 1, 1979 - The proclamation was signed by United Nations Secretary General Kurt Waldheim.
- January 9, 1979 - The Music for UNICEF Concert is held at the UN General Assembly.

2009 marks the thirtieth anniversary of the International Year of the Child.[1] At the onset of the new millennium, the Millennium Development Goals sought to define achievable outcomes of social and economic policies having significant bearing on the problems affecting children throughout the world. These are widely viewed as having been influenced by events such as the International Year of the Child.
