International School of Tanganyika

The International School of Tanganyika (IST) is an international school in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, which opened in 1963. As of 2005 it had two campuses with over 100 teaching staff serving 960 students from more than 60 countries.

The International School of Tanganyika is an International Baccalaureate World School which hosts the Primary Years, Middle Years, and Diploma Programmes.

Scholars from IST have gone to universities such as MIT, Harvard, Oxford, Yale, Brown, LSE, UCL, Princeton, Columbia, Cornell, Stanford and SCAD. The class of 2006 had acceptances from all of those except Harvard, which gave offers in 2005, 2004 and 2007. Some students do well in the IB Diploma exams, many achieve the IB "excellent status" (35 points or more out of a possible 45). As well as their academic studies all students from grades 6 up engage in the Community service aspect of the IB CAS programme. In 2003, the community service activity "Eyesight for All" was selected by the IBO (International Baccalaureate Organization) as being the best community service activity in the world.

In sports, IST performs in the regional ISSEA (International School's of Southern and Eastern Africa) tournaments in which International Schools from Uganda, Kenya, Ethiopia, Zimbabwe and South Africa compete in Basketball, Volleyball, Cricket Sixes, Rugby and Football.
