International Premium Rate Service is a planned international telephone service, using the country calling code 979, based on caller-pays calls from participating countries to the IPRS subscriber's number.
The format of the numbers will be 979 a bcdefghi, where the a digit, 1, 3, 5 or 9, will indicate the charging band, and the remaining digits will be the IPRS subscriber's number. 1, 3 and 5 indicate charge bands 1, 2 and 3, respectively, while 9 will indicate a special charge band. The service may equate to the 900 "pay-pay-pay-per-call" service that is widely known in the United States.
The service is not yet known to be active. Once it is activated, it may not be available from every country, even though there is minimal or no cost to the receiving customer, as interchange rates would need to be negotiated for countries to allow origination of calls.
