International Institute of Information Technology, Bangalore, abbreviated to iiit-b, is a premium graduate school in India. Founded in 1999, it offers M.Tech., MS (Research) and PhD programs in the field of Information Technology. In February 2005, iiit-b was conferred Deemed University status under Section 3 of the University Grants Commission (UGC) Act 1956.
IIIT-Bangalore is promoted by the Government of Karnataka and the IT industry. IIIT-Bangalore is managed by a Governing Body with N.R.Narayana Murthy, Chief Mentor of Infosys, as the Chairperson.[1]
The university is a member of LAOTSE, an international network of leading universities in Europe and Asia.

IIIT-B was instituted on September 15, 1999 as the Indian Institute of Information Technology with its campus located at ITPL[2]. The institute functioned at ITPL for the first four years. In August 2003, IIIT-B relocated to its present campus at Electronics City. IIIT-B was founded after taking inspiration from the other well established Institutes of National Importance (INI) in India. These INI's include, but are not limited to, the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), National Institutes of Technology (NITs) and the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs).
Initially, the institute offered Post Graduate Diplomas in Information Technology. Upon becoming a Deemed University in January 2005, the institute began conferring students with the degree of Master of Technology. The name of the institute was changed to International Institute of Information Technology before becoming a university.

The vision of the university is To build on the track record set by India in general and Bangalore in particular, to enable India to play a key role in the IT scenario through a world-class institute with a focus on education and research, entrepreneurship and innovation.

iiit-b is located in Bangalore in the Electronic City zone, which houses major Electronics and Information Technology corporations that include Infosys, the flagship IT services major (more than 2 billion dollars in revenue in 2005-2006 with 50,000+ employees), Wipro, another billion dollar Indian IT services major, Siemens, Hewlett-Packard, General Electric, Flextronics, and STPI (Software Technology Parks of India).

The institute is being governed by a board comprising of Mr. N. R. About 300 students are currently enrolled in the M. Tech. (2 year full time) degree program. These students are selected through an All India Entrance Examination out of thousands of applicants from all over the country. The PhD program was started in August 2005. There are nine PhD students and six MS (Research) students currently registered with IIIT-Bangalore. It is expected to reach a size of 40 over the next five years.

Nearly 700 alumni have graduated in the six convocations held so far.
Four of them have stayed back for a PhD at IIIT-Bangalore; another six of them have gone to other premier institutes (MIT USA, University of Washington, Seattle USA, Brandenburg, Germany, University of Trento, Italy, University of California, Berkeley, USA and BITS Pilani) to pursue PhDs.
The majority of them have gone to work either in premier Indian corporations - Infosys, TCS, Wipro, iFlex, Covansys, CTS, Ramco, Mastek, Satyam, VisualSoft, Kodiak Networks, GAVS; or in MNCs - Cisco Systems, Goldman Sachs, Royal Bank Of Scotland,American Express, GE, Intel, Microsoft, Microsoft Research, SAP, Yahoo, Philips, Siemens, Honeywell, HP, IBM, Novell, Oracle, EMC, TI, Samsung, BEA, Motorola, WebMethod /SoftwareAG, FastVDO and FiberLink.

There are a number of government & industry funded labs functioning at IIIT Bangalore. These include Intel Planet Lab, Honeywell Control Lab, Intel Community PC Lab, HP IMS Lab, Siemens Vision Lab and HP Cluster Computing Lab.
There are a number of research projects funded by the government & by industry. These include ICT for development funded by the Department of Information Technology of the Government of India, the Telematics Project funded by the Department of Science & Technology of the Government of India, ICT for Development funded by Microsoft, ICT Cluster Study funded by the Liverhume Trust, Cluster Computing in University Environment funded by HP, Community PC Initiatives funded by Intel, and MONSOON & INCITE projects of the European Union.
