[edit] Template Requests

It would be appreciated if someone could make a set of templates for the Kazoo. It's an instrument that practically anyone can play. kallemax 20:18, 12 November 2005 (UTC)

Done - Rooivalk 02:38, 26 November 2005 (UTC)

Could someone make a "This user hates the (instrument), but can play it at the (etc.) level anyways.", please? or something similar. Thanks.

(edit)changed my mind, crossed out what sounded stupid.22:48, 6 March 2006 (UTC)

--Tomfulton 00:46, 6 March 2006 (UTC)

I know this is pathetically pedantic, but the kazoo is technically a membranophone; Rather than create another category, I've moved it to "woodwind" as it's more like a woodwind instrument than a brass one :) -- Djbb2 02:29, 23 April 2006 (UTC)

A set of templates for Bass clarinet would be sweet. Shploo

A set of templates for specific saxophones (i.e. Alto Saxophone, Baritone Saxophone, ect.) would be good too.Unionhawk (talk) 20:32, 18 November 2007 (UTC)

[edit] TfD debate

This template survived a debate at TfD. The discussion can be found here. -Splashtalk 17:37, 20 November 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Composition

Is there a template if someone is doing composition?

Composition is not itself a playable instrument, and does not really belong within the instruments category. Perhaps in another category or on its own. --TheKMan 06:03, 11 December 2005 (UTC)
I just saw on the main userbox page that there is one for composition. Look here Wikipedia:Userboxes#Musical_Instruments — TheKMantalk 02:23, 15 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Viol

Viol needs to have the categories changed from the viol prefix to vdg, if it is to be compatible with the instrument template. (or change the template names. changing the categories may have less of an impact.) — TheKMantalk 07:00, 17 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Suggestion

Why not have a category on the instrument Triangle? J.J.Sagnella 20:28, 18 December 2005 (UTC)

Yes, why not? Done. Ddawson 11:07, 25 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Bass Trombone

I have noticed in the past year or so since I have become one that bass trombonists usually seperate themselves from tenor trombonists. Since there are different templates for bass guitar and guitar, why not bass trombone and trombone? That would be so awesome.schyler 06:43, 27 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Interesting developments

In my absence from Wikipedia (enforced by the demands of an airliner design project in uni which has taken over my life) there seem to have been some fairly drastic developments on the userboxes front. I'm grateful to User:Ddawson to taking on my fledgling Instruments project and both improving the template system and increasing its momentum.

It seems, however, that somewhere along the way a whole Userbox movement has evolved and has even attracted several comments from Jimbo Wales. A lot of people seem to have jumped on the Userboxes-as-bumper-stickers bandwagon, a development which I'm not convinced is healthy.

The reason I stopped displaying my own instrument templates on my user page was that I was discouraged by the comments I received from others about templates for instruments and other skills not being encyclopaedic. I argued to the contrary and it is interesting to read the eventual TfD entry for this page where there seems to have been unanimous agreement to Keep. I sort of wish I'd been around to join in :)

Anyway, my point is basically that I'm glad the Babel-spinoff Instruments template system has taken off and that people seem to think it's A Good Idea. I just hope I'm not indirectly responsible for the political/religious/POV/advocacy/etc. craziness that seems to have happened when I was away! Hopefully the project is helping to make a better encyclopaedia, as was my intention from the start. - Yummifruitbat 00:59, 26 February 2006 (UTC)

I agree that instrument templates should be kept, and don't even agree that they are useless for encyclopedic content. For example, I've played guitar for more than a year, and have no idea about what a bohdrán is, therefore I'm much more likely, and capable, to edit an article related to guitars than one related to bohdráns. --Army1987 09:18, 26 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Policy on ID boxes

I was wondering if there was a policy on whether the ID boxes of the userboxes should or should not have pictures of the actual instrument instead of the code (i.e., having a picture of a piano instead of pno-2). Thanks.--Methegreat 22:49, 22 April 2006 (UTC)

I agree - it would be quite easy to make an ID box made up of a picture of the instrument with the relevant number in front of it. The only problem would be finding pictures for all the instruments in the list! Any volunteers? -- Djbb2 02:18, 23 April 2006 (UTC)
I checked them all and the only instruments without an image to go with them are Fortepiano, Tangent Piano, Front Ensemble, Keyboard Percussion, Vibraphone, Psaltery, and Air Guitar. One other problem this idea presents is that most of the woodwind instruments are much longer than they are wide and would not fit in a square unless they were cropped, or made very small.--Methegreat 19:51, 23 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Skill level?

There are people who play musical instruments in ways that have nothing to do with the rigid hierarcy imposed by the the skill level system. Can userboxes be added to each of these categories that do not impose a number rating to how accomplished one is or is not at playing an instrument? Morganfitzp 00:26, 11 May 2006 (UTC)

In addition, how do I determine what skill level I am at?

[edit] Deletion discussion

At Wikipedia:User categories for discussion#Instrument debabelization, Mike Selinker (talk · contribs) has proposed "Instrument debabelization", which would involve removing the skill level categories (keeping the larger instrumentation supercategories, and keeping the skill level userboxes). If you have an opinion on this topic, please contribute to the discussion at the link above. Powers T 16:09, 7 November 2006 (UTC)

  • Also, I've modified the proposal to have a "novice (player)" category as well as a global category, to allow people to self-select by interest even if they don't feel they have enough proficiency to record samples and such.--Mike Selinker 19:49, 7 November 2006 (UTC)
    • The vote has been closed as keep, which means CFDU is OK with the Babel system for instruments (at least categories 1-4), as well as languages and computer languages. Just thought folks would like to know.--Mike Selinker 02:31, 15 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Deletion of skill-level categories?

At Template_talk:User_instrument#Confused, I raise the question of why some of the skill-level categories have been deleted. Not much response. Anyone available to explain? Powers T 14:38, 10 July 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Double Redirects

These all need to be speedied, I don't have the time. They are part of the poorly copied template {{user instrument box}}, the original template being {{Music}} which was moved to {{User Instruments List}}. There is absolutely no need for them. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Sox207 (talkcontribs) 17:08, September 16, 2007

[edit] Category/PAGENAME fix

I believe this was suggested a while ago at the template talk page but I don't think it was ever implemented. Right now (as far as I can tell), all users who place an instrument userbox on their user page get categorized under the letter "U", for "User:". I know how to fix this for plain userboxes, so that users are categorized alphabetically according to their username:

<includeonly>{{{category|[[Category:(category name here)|{{PAGENAME}}]]}}}</includeonly>

-- but the fix is probably much more complex for a template like this and besides which the page is protected. Can an admin please look into this? It's frustrating to look at the categories only to see everyone showing up under "U". Thanks.

[edit] Electric guitar

There´s surprisingly no userbox for people playing E-guitar. So could someone create a userbox for people playing this instrument? Dagadt (talk) 16:35, 14 March 2008 (UTC)
