can someone help solve the riddle of where I/B/E/S data comes from, and how it might be directly obtained without having to go through an intermediary like Bloomberg, Thomson, or Reuters?

YES, it cannot be obtained directly as is the proprietary information of Thomson Financial who bought the company.
