Insurance commissioner

Insurance commissioner (or commissioner of insurance) is an executive office in many U.S. states, some in the state cabinet. The office differs state by state:

  • In some states insurance commissioner is a constitutional office established by state constitution; in other states the office was created by state statute;
  • In some states the insurance commissioner is an elected officials; in other states they are appointed by the state governor;
  • In some states the insurance department or division is autonomous; in other states such a department is part of a larger body.
