The Institute Of Medical Sciences (IMS-BHU) is one of the three institutes of Banaras Hindu University in Varanasi, India and at present comprises three faculties:

  1. The Faculty of Medicine, which conducts M.B.B.S.,M.D.and M.S. courses in different disciplines, D.M. and M.Ch. courses in different superspecialities, Ph. D courses and M.Sc. (Health Statistics) besides a few P.G. Diploma courses
  2. The Faculty of Dental Sciences, which conducts M.D.S.and B.D.S.courses
  3. The Faculty of Ayurveda, which conducts B.A.M.S.,M.D.(Ay)and M.S.(Ay) and Ph.D. courses besides a few P.G. Diploma courses

The Institute of Medical Sciences is the medical school of the University. IMS-BHU is one of India's highest-ranked medical colleges, and like the rest of B.H.U., it is a residential, co-educational institute. It admits undergraduate (M.B.B.S.) students through the highly selective BHU-PMT Entrance Examination held by B.H.U. at different cities of India. The B.D.S.,M.D.S.,M.D./M.S., D.M./M.Ch., B.A.M.S., M.D.Ay)/M.S.(Ay)and Ph. D students are selected through respective national entrance tests held by B.H.U in Varanasi. The M.Sc. (Health Stistics) students are admitted through a common post-graduate entrance test conducted by BHU in different cities of India.

Institute Of Medical Sciences is a residential medical institution with its own campus . Every year it admits 55 undergraduate students and 86 postgraduate students.

The Institute started functioning as College of Medical Sciences in the year 1960 with just only 9 Departments of Modern Medicine. Under the dedicated and dynamic leadership of Dr. K.N. Udupa, the Founder Director of the Institute, it made all round progress, and in the year 1971, the College of Medical Sciences, was upgraded as Institute of Medical Sciences. Today it has 33 Departments of Modern Medicine including 10 Departments of Super-specialities and 8 Departments of Ayurveda.

The campus of IMS lies at the front part of university. The campus contains the medical college, the hospital, the student and resident hostels, the staff quarters, , a postoffice, a temple, playgrounds and sporting fields. While the hospital section of the campus is typically crowded and busy, the residential part of the campus is quiet and idyllic punctuated with small parks.

IMS is not under the direct administrative control of Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India but Banaras Hindu University, an autonomous Central University under Ministry of Human resource development, Government of India. The three main functions of this institute are to impart quality education in undergraduate and postgraduate medical and paramedical courses, to be a trend-setter in medical research and to offer patient care of high order.

The institute is headed by the Director as the Chief Executive charged with overall responsibility of running the institute and the hospital. The Dean helps the Director in co-ordinating all academic activities of the institute including teaching and research. There are 28 academic departments headed by Professors. Ancillary hospital service units are supervised by respective technical heads.

The institute is affiliated to the Banaras Hindu University and offers a number of medical and paramedical courses at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Admission to the courses are made on all-India basis and strictly on the basis of merit through entrance examinations.

The students also pursue research for the award of Ph.D. and D.Sc. degrees in various subjects.

The first batch of MBBS students qualified in the year 1965. It is a matter of great satisfaction that this degree was recognised by British Medical Council even before the Medical Council of India.

In the year 1962, MD and MS courses were started in the Departments of Medicine and Surgery, later this degree course is being conducted in all the departments of Modern Medicine and Ayurveda.

Since the year 1976, post-doctoral DM and MCh courses were introduced after recommendations of the Expert Committees and Board of Studies of each course and with due approval of the Academic Council of Banaras Hindu University. Today DM degree course is available in Cardiology, Endocrinology, Gastroenterology, Nephrology, Neurology and M.Ch. degree course in Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery, Neurosurgery, Paediatric Surgery, Plastic Surgery and Urology.

The candidates thus trained in broad and super-specialities are holding high positions with distinctions in Academics, Health Services, Corporate Hospitals or are practicing consultants of repute, both in the country and abroad.

The Institute also provides research facilities for Ph.D. Scholars in the field of Basic and Life Sciences. The research facilities at the Centre of Experimental Medicine and Surgery, Molecular Biology, Department of Biochemistry, Medicinal Chemistry and such other laboratories have been rated highly in National and International scene. In a survey conducted by British Medical Journal in the year 1993-94, the cumulative research material of this institution was rated as the third best in the country. Some of our institute laboratories have been upgraded as Advanced Centre for research by the University Grants Commission.

The campus has 3 hostels for undergraduate men named punarvasu atrey hostel , ruiya medical hostel and dhanwntri hostel, and 3 hostel for postgraduate men named old p.g.hostel, new p.g. hostel and married doctors hostel. Undergraduate and postgraduate women live in kasturba girls hostel . All hostels run their own messes that provide a huge variety of Indian meals.

imsonian, the students of IMS,BHU The inter-collegiate cultural, literary and sports festival of IMS is called elixir and is held in mid February every year and is organized by the imsonians. In addition, the imsonian holds annual inter-class competitions where undergraduate students within IMS compete in various cultural, literary and sporting events. Both the undergraduate men’s hostels and the undergraduate women’s hostel hold annual hostel days.
