Installer.app

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Installer.app is an application for installing third party applications on or extending the capabilities of an iPhone or iPod touch. Installer.app is a utility installed after jailbreaking an iPhone or iPod Touch. The version for v1.0.-1.0.2 and v1.1.2 was also called AppTapp and the online installer for direct iPhone or iPod Touch jailbreaking was also called AppSnapp. With every firmware update, hacks have been disabled. Installer.app can be downloaded for iBrickr also and the 1.1.2 Windows jailbreaking package "HomeFree" also installs Installer. Installer is developed by Nullver. You can "Jailbreak" and use Installer. app on the iPhone and iPod Touch firmware versions 1.1.1, 1.1.2, 1.1.3, and 1.1.4.

[edit] AppSnapp

Conceited Software, another group involved with iPhone 3rd party apps, expanded on another site's idea to create AppSnapp. AppSnapp allows one to jailbreak an iPhone or iPod touch without a computer. It requires firmware 1.1.1, as it relies on using the TIFF exploit. AppSnapp installs Installer.app, patches the "SpringBoard" (the home screen) to allow 3rd party apps, and patches the TIFF exploit, making the device more secure.whats up

[edit] Installer 3

Installer 3 is the latest version of the installer. The latest version includes the following:

  • Doesn't display the apps that you have already installed
  • Only displays the apps that are compatible with your firmware
  • New GUI making it more user friendly

Apps are downloaded from sources (web servers that hold apps) through WiFi and installed onto the iPhone/iPod Touch. A variety of applications can be installed with the default sources and other sources can be added through a interface in installer. Therefore, an unlimited number of different applications can be installed.

There are hundreds of sources which you have to add manually to Installer. There are also a few services with which you can make your own 'custom' repository (or source):

  • Your Repository [1]
  • iAppCat [2]
  • Repo.sc [3]

[edit] Competition from iBrickr

iBrickr by Nate True has given Installer its main competition. It can install applications itself through its PXL repository. It can only work with 1.0-1.0.2 iPhones, although it can do downgrades from 1.1.1 and 1.1.2. Many people have sent their iPhone into loop reboot by clicking "Boot iPhone(Click Here if You Don't Know" instead of "Install 1.0.2 now" when using 1.1.2. You can fix this by putting iPhone in recovery mode. But a recent survey from AppSafari.com has concluded that 661 people (or 48%) of visitors on their site have used AppSnapp, while 48 people (4%) use iBrickr).[citation needed]
