Inspector Montalbano

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Inspector Salvo Montalbano is a fictional character created by Sicilian writer Andrea Camilleri.

Set in the imaginary town of Vigata, the fractious detective's character and manner encapsulate much of Sicilian mythology - brooding philosophy, whip smart dialogue, rugged beauty, superb food - and astute detective work. Montalbano has been played for Italian TV by Luca Zingaretti in two different mini-series. The series was almost entirely shot in the Sicilian city of Ragusa, Italy, and surrounding towns[1].

The name Montalbano is an homage to the Spanish writer Manuel Vázquez Montalbán; the striking similarities between Montalbán's Pepe Carvalho and Camilleri's fictional dictective is remarkable. Both writers make great play of their protagonists' gastronomic preferences. [2]
