[edit] Mission
The Insight Software Consortium was conceived as a non profit organization for holding the copyright of open-source software jointly developed by commercial and academic institutions. The consortium was originally created by the developers of the Insight Toolkit ITK as a mechanism for centralizing the management of copyright for the software that each one of the different institutions contributed to the ITK toolkit. The distribution of this software as open-source was one of the requirements that the National Library of Medicine imposed to the developers of the ITK toolkit when funding the project under the scope of the Visible Human Project.
