[edit] Interpretation
According to guitarist Dan Donegan, "It's about a girl he [vocalist David Draiman] was in a relationship with. She's committed suicide, and he just has the voice of the devil over his shoulder trying to provoke him to take his own life to join her again, because the only chance for him to be with her again is if he takes his life. We're not condoning suicide off of this, it's just more of the temptation to join a girlfriend that was very confused and messed up and wanted out."[2]
When asked by a fan during the DeepRockDrive Concert, if Devon was really his girlfriend, Draiman replied: "That wasn't actually her real name, in "Inside the Fire", a lot of people have asked what that's about. It is actually, unfortunately about a true incident of suicide that happened when I was a young kid, about 14, [or] 15 years old. I had a girl who was a heroin addict and, [went] down the wrong path and got obsessive compulsive, became way too attached and wanted to tell my parents about our relationship that I wasn't allowed to have, I was going to a religious boarding school at the time, and I wasn't even allowed to talk to a girl, let alone date a girl. Couldn't see movies, couldn't read newspapers, couldn't, had to bless before I ate, after I ate, pray three times a day, all that kind of stuff. But, unfortunately, she took her own life, and it's been something that has haunted me for a very, very long time." [3]

[edit] Music video
A video was made with director Nathan Cox.[4] The video for "Inside the Fire" was described as "bloody and intense" according to frontman David Draiman.[5] The video premiered on May 2, 2008 on Disturbed's official site and mainly follows the meaning of the song. Due to the message of the video and the intensity of it, a warning message appears before the video due to its content. Also a suicide hotline number appears at the beginning (foretold by Draiman himself) and the end of the video.
Three versions of the video have been released. The unedited version which follows the meaning of the song, and an edited version of the video which can be merely be described as more of a "performance video" with all of the storyline of the video removed.[6]
A third version labeled "ultra clean" has been sent on May 29, 2008 to TV stations without any blood in it.
