INSEAD is an international graduate business school and research institution with campuses in France and in Singapore. The official name of the school is INSEAD (phonetically pronounced IN-see-ad), which originally stood for Institut Européen d’Administration des Affaires.[1]
One of the world's leading business schools, INSEAD's main differentiation factor lies in its global perspective and cultural diversity.[2][3][4][5][6]
As of 2007, 143 faculty members from more than 30 countries teach nearly 900 MBA students, 59 Executive MBA candidates, 59 Ph.D. students, and over 8,000 executives from around the world on its two campuses.[7]
INSEAD has two main campuses. The original campus is located in Fontainebleau, near Paris, France, adjacent to the second largest forest in Europe. In 2000, INSEAD inaugurated a second campus in the city-state of Singapore. They are officially called the Europe Campus and the Asia Campus respectively. The school officially emphasizes it is a global school, neither a French nor a Singaporean school.[8]

[edit] Mission
INSEAD's stated mission is to "promote a non-dogmatic learning environment that brings together people, cultures and ideas from around the world, changing lives, and helping transform organisations through management education", "develop responsible, thoughtful leaders and entrepreneurs who create value for their organisations and their communities" and "through research, expand the frontiers of academic thought and influence business practice".[9]
[edit] MBA
[edit] Outline of the program
The MBA curriculum is made of a range of required core courses and electives. The core courses cover traditional management disciplines including finance, economics, organizational behaviour, accounting, ethics, marketing, statistics, operations management, international political analysis, supply chain management, leadership and corporate strategy. The teaching method includes case studies, lectures, peer to peer learning, group work, simulations and role-plays. MBA participants are graded on a relative curve.
INSEAD's student body comprises more than 70 nationalities, with no nationality representing more than 15% of the student body. All participants must have a practical knowledge of a language other than English at entry and are required to be proficient in a third language before finishing the program. Mother tongues of MBA programme participants, July and December 2006 classes, are: English 17%, French 13%, Hindi 8%, Spanish 6%, German 5%, Mandarin 4%, Portuguese 4%, Other 43%.[10]
There is no distinction in admissions between either campus for MBA participants.[11] All MBA participants can choose a preferred campus to start the MBA programme, and have an option to move to either location. Professors also move between campuses throughout a year. More than 70% of December 2006 class MBA participants opted to exchange between the two campuses.[12] In addition to studying in Europe and Asia, participants can also opt to complete part of the programme in the US (there is an alliance between INSEAD and the Wharton School where MBA participants at each school can study at the other).
[edit] Admissions
The Admissions Committee selects candidates from a pool of applicants on the basis of various qualities and look in particular for excellent academic performance, career progress, interpersonal skills and leadership potential.[13]
All applicants must hold a bachelor's degree or equivalent, demonstrate fluency in English and are required to submit a lengthy application with detailed essays supporting their case, two recommendations, their Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) score and academic transcripts. MBA participants' average GMAT score is currently 702 (class of July 2007).[14]
Applicants who successfully pass the initial screening process by the Admissions Committee are invited to two interviews conducted by two different INSEAD MBA alumni in their country of residence.[15]
[edit] Post MBA Careers
INSEAD is recognised as a source of individuals with proven academic excellence and strong managerial potential. The INSEAD Career Services team [16] assists companies wishing to recruit INSEAD MBAs and participants. Approximately 120 companies/firms visit the Asia and Europe campuses during each recruitment season. Career Services organises company presentations and bi-annual career fairs on both campuses, sources jobs on its internal platform CareerLink and publishes a CV book for each graduating class.
Main employers of 2006 class MBA participants and the number of graduates employed were McKinsey & Company (75), Bain & Company (46), Boston Consulting Group (36), Booz Allen Hamilton (17), Barclays Group (16), Standard Chartered Bank (14), American Express (10), Merrill Lynch (10), Citi (10).[17]
INSEAD has a reciprocal agreement with Harvard, Wharton, and Stanford to share career services. Alumni of the four schools have access to job opportunities database of each other.[18]
In fall 2008, INSEAD alumni will gain access to job opportunities on a new INSEAD inhouse career platform. INSEAD also participates in the MBA Global Career Forum, together with other leading business schools.[19]
[edit] Executive Education
INSEAD holds both company specific and open enrollment executive education programmes. They include general management, leadership, finance and banking, strategy, people and performance management, marketing, operations management and entreprenuership and family business programmes.[20]
[edit] INSEAD Knowledge
INSEAD Knowledge web portal showcases faculty research, with articles and podcast interviews (audio and video). It also features interviews with business leaders. The portal is updated frequently.
[edit] INSEAD Research Centres (Centres of Excellence)
INSEAD has several Research Centres conducting research in different areas such as social innovation, advanced learning technologies, entrepreneurship, etc.
[edit] INSEAD Alumni Association
INSEAD alumni live in over 160 countries across all continents.
There are 37 countries around the world in which over 100 INSEAD alumni live and work. There are approximately 18,000 living MBA alumni and 42 national alumni associations. [21]
Most INSEAD alumni are members of the INSEAD International Alumni Association with its 42 national alumni associations, and return for their alumni reunions on campus.[22]
[edit] INSEAD Clubs
[edit] Global Leader Series
The Global Leader Series is organized by MBA program participants at INSEAD to bring distinguished global leaders such as CEOs of global corporations and other business and world leaders to the INSEAD MBA program. The Global Leader Series was started in June 2001 by three students of the January 2001 promotion, was taken over by students of subsequent promotions, who continually grew and enhanced the club's activities since then. In the last few years, GLS speakers have included Meg Whitman (Ebay), Carlos Ghosn (Renault), Paul Skinner (Rio Tinto), Peter Brabeck-Lemanth (Nestle), Samuel J. Palmisano (IBM), Narayana Murthy (Infosys), Henri de Castries (AXA), Stephen Green (HSBC), Michael Eskew (UPS), Dr. Mathias Doepfner (Axel Springer), Sir Martin Sorrell (WPP), Dr Wolfgang Ziebart (Infineon Technologies), Todd Stitzer (Cadbury plc), and Ian Davis (McKinsey & Company). [23]
[edit] INSEAD Private Equity Club
IPEC is one of the most prominent clubs on INSEAD campus. It organizes the Annual INSEAD Private Equity Conference - which provides an exceptional forum for discussions of the latest industry developments, as well as excellent networking opportunities. Since 2003, the INSEAD Private Equity Conference has grown to be the largest and most successful Private Equity and Venture Capital event hosted by an academic institution in Europe. Its success has grown as a result of the large network of over 600 alumni working in the industry worldwide, INSEAD’s extensive relationships with top firms, the presence of leading finance faculty and INSEAD’s highly talented students.
[edit] INDEVOR
Founded in 1993, INDEVOR is the largest MBA student club at INSEAD. INDEVOR serves as a forum to examine the role of business in society. While originally focused purely on International Development, over the past years INDEVOR's focus has shifted to all areas that might be considered under the Social Impact umbrella (CSR, Philanthropy, Sustainability, microfinance, etc.). [24]
[edit] INSEAD Energy Club
The INSEAD Energy Club is a forum of discussion and networking for energy and environment related issues for all of the INSEAD community. By leveraging its alumni network and corporate relationships across both campuses, they are able to support future entrepreneurs in nascent industries such as alternative energy technologies and carbon trading, and reach across the entire energy spectrum from nuclear, oil & gas, and coal through to the newer "clean" technologies.
The club takes corporate social responsibility seriously, and promotes sustainability issues through close cooperation with the INSEAD International Development Club, also known as INDEVOR, and the INSEAD Social Innovation Center. You can find more information about the club from its website: http://www.insead.edu/mba/clubs/energyclub/ [25]
[edit] INSEAD Women In Business Club
The INSEAD Women in Business club is a forum for collaboration and community building among MBA students interested in the role of future women business leaders. The goals of the club are to provide networking opportunities with alumnae and successful businesswomen in order to provide role-models for current students; support the professional, academic, and social interests of women in business; strengthen INSEAD culture by promoting an environment of tolerance and respect for all students; and attract more qualified female participants into INSEAD’s programs.
