Inje County (Inje-gun) is a county in Gangwon Province, South Korea. It has lowest population density in South Korea county.

From the earliest time, people have lived here in Inje county, surrounded by clear and clean water and magnificent Mt. Seorak. Located in the mid-east of Gangwon-do, it was at first called Jeojokhyeon in the Goguryeo Kingdom, Heejaehyeon in the Silla Kingdom, Inje in the Goryeo Dynasty, Youngsohyeon and again later Inje in the Joseon Dynasty and finally raised to the status of Inje county on August, 1896.[1]

Inje cherishes green area lying in Taeback Mountains. Several species inhabit several areas not only mountains but rivers.

  • Asiatic Black Bear : It covers a wide area like Ussuri, the east Siberia, China, Cambodia, Thai and the East Asia from Kashmir, Himalaya, the east Afghanistan and Taiwan, Japan and finally Paekdusan, Seoraksan, Jirisan in Korea.

It has been getting rare in South Korea. Usually, it lives in broadleaf forest on the higher than 1,500m, finding lots of fruits like wild grapes, wild berries, fruits of Acfinidia arguta, especially acorns in it. Developed in the sense of smell and hearing but not in the sight. [2]

  • Musk deer : Among the Musk deers in the northern hemisphere, this species in the east-north of it is divided into 7 subspecies. This subspecies based on the mountains around Mokpo, Jeonranamdo is reported to be distributed Manchuria, Amur, Ussuri from the east Siberia as well as South Korea.

  • Senecio koreanus : It is Korean Endemic Species.
  • Carex chordorhiza : The perennial plant growing with sphagnum in a swamp, at first grows straight and then crawls laterally to take root from its joint where comes a stem to grow up to 20cm for flower blossom. Its leaves are flat and 1~1.5cm wide with colors of gray and green. The heads are egg-like and numbered 2~4 which are 5~7cm long. Male flowers come out upward but female ones downward without any bracts.
  • Megaleranthis saniculifolia : It is also Korean Endemic Species and clungs to Ranunculaceae. Inhibit

Jeombongsan, Sobaeksan, Jirisan and Taebaeksan

Living in the swamps or ridges in deep mountains, the perennial plant sprouts in stubbles. It's between 30 and 40cm tall. Leaves came from the root are divided into three parts at the end of the long leafstalk to be split into 2 to 3 parts again.

[edit] Daecheong peak

Daecheong Peak, the highest peak on Mt. Seorak, is near at the boundary of Inje county and Yangyang county, and it lies on the altitude of 1,708m.[3]

Beautiful snow scene is widely known by many people. Near area is quite cold area so from early november, it is snowy around peaks. In case of 2007, heavy snow was occurred first in Nov. 16.[4]

Thanks to its climate, lots of fishing manias get together. In fact, other counties in Gangwon-do benefits these facts, too. However, the feature of Inje county is to fish pond smelt.

Tourists per day reach 6,000 people and over 10,000 on weekends.[5]
