[edit] Help me

((help me)) I've recently posted an article on an artist called "Carter" -- Carter (Artist, American, b.1970).

I noticed he doesn't come up on the search list and when I access the page through 'my contributions' there is a notice that he's not attributed to any specific search criteria. He should be credited under Academics. Proof of his professional activity can be viewed at: http://www.carteroffice.com/firstpage/firstpage.html. Could you please advise how to correct this? Many thanks!

[edit] Carter

Hi. I noticed the comment at the top of your talk page. Your Carter article was moved to this location: Carter (Artist). Just so you know, for the helpme tag to work, you need to use instead of (()). I hope this helps you. GassyGuy 15:30, 20 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Copyrighted Material

Please don't add copyrighted text to Wikipedia
We appreciate your contribution to the article David Ratcliff, but we cannot accept copyrighted text borrowed from other web sites or printed material. Please see Wikipedia:Copyright problems for more information on this topic, or generally, Wikipedia:Policies and guidelines. Please do not remove any copyright violation notice placed in the article or repost the suspected infringing text.

I've noticed by looking at your contributions that you have made more than 30 new articles on artists to Wikipedia in a single day (July 20, 2006). This, as well as a quick perusal through said articles, leads me to believe that you are entering copyrighted material into Wikipedia. Although additions are greatly appreciated, you cannot copy and paste text directly from other web pages. As the template above suggests, you are welcome to edit your articles to ensure that there are no copyright issues. i've wikified the article for Matthew Monahan but it still needs to be more WP:NPOV. I and other editors appreciate the energy you have and hope you continue to contribute to Wikipedia in a legal and positive manner. BrianZ(talk) 02:13, 21 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Daniel Hesidence

Although you may say the copyright has been lifted on the text, how can wikipedia be sure? This article needs to be re-written. If you rewrite it (especially the bottom paragraphs) then it will probably be acceptable. If not, I am going to send it to articles for deletion. It asserts notability but does not include any sources to prove it (the links you added are to the gallery and not to show that he was actually shown there.--Thomas.macmillan 21:00, 7 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] multiple edits

I have made a number of edits to articles that you have created - Dexter Dalwood, Johannes Wohnseifer, Michael Raedecker, Muntean and Rosenblum as, aside from copyright issues, the removed content is not encyclopaedic and reads like an essay. :: Princess Tiswas 17:52, 23 November 2006 (UTC)

The same goes for Hernan Bas, Joe Bradley, Ena Swansea, Tal R, Lucy McKenzie, Andrea Lehmann, Anselm Reyle, Thomas Zipp, Michael Bauer (artist) :: Princess Tiswas 18:08, 23 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Your edits to Amy Sillman

Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia. We appreciate your contributions to the Amy Sillman article, but for legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images borrowed from other web sites or printed material, and as a consequence, your addition will most likely be deleted.

Feel free to re-submit a new version of the article. You may use external websites as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. This part is crucial: say it in your own words.

If the external website belongs to you, and you want to allow Wikipedia to use the text — which means allowing other people to modify it — then you must include on the external site the statement "I, (name), am the author of this article, (article name), and I irrevocably release its content under the terms of the GNU Free Documentation License, Version 1.2 and later, for use on Wikipedia and elsewhere."

You might want to look at Wikipedia's policies and guidelines for more details, or ask a question here. You can also leave a message on my talk page. Thaurisil 07:31, 6 December 2006 (UTC)

Hi Infoart. I'm sorry for the warning, I didn't know you held the copyright. To be honest, I don't really understand licenses and copyright-related things too well, but if it helps, you can read this, which I got from a paragraph near the top of Wikipedia:Copyright problems.

Copyright owners who submitted their own work to Wikipedia: If you submitted work to Wikipedia which you had previously published (especially online), and your submission was marked as a potential infringement of copyright, stating that you are the copyright holder of the work on the article's talk page helps, but will not likely prevent deletion. It is sufficient to either:

 • Make a note permitting reuse under the GFDL at the site of the original publication; or
 • Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en at wikimedia dot org or a postal message to the Wikimedia Foundation.

There are other links at Wikipedia:Copyright problems too, you might like to see if there's anything that might help. Hope this helped! Thaurisil 16:43, 7 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Catgorization

Hello. I noticed that a bunch of your recently uploaded articles on artists don't have category links on them. These are fairly simple to fix; if you like, you can tag them with things like [[Category:[Year of birth] births|lastname, firstname]] and . This helps to group them with other articles about similar artists. You can also choose to forego categorization, in which case you should tag the articles with categorize; then somebody else can come in and do it for you.

Keep up the good work, and happy editing! --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 19:00, 17 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Martin Maloney

Re. your edit, Maloney has worked with the Saatchi Gallery helping to curate shows such as Neurotic Realism. It did not say he worked for the gallery, though that is not of course impossible in the circumstances. I have not reinstated the line, as it is not explained later in the main text. [edit] re Christoph Ruckhaberle

I have placed an Original research template on the above article. Although I have now read some of the comments at this place I shall assume good faith and not change the template to Copyvio, although I will note these comments. If you are able to provide some information regarding the writing of the above article then it would be gratefully received. LessHeard vanU 19:22, 31 March 2007 (UTC)

Visiting the links shows it's entirely copyvio from About Christoph Ruckhäberle and his art at the Saatchi Gallery listing. Gordonofcartoon 15:27, 30 May 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Unencyclopedic material

I agree with previous concerns. Recent articles like Alisa Margolis, Alice Konitz, Aaron Spangler, Will Fowler and many more, are all are based on descriptions from the Saatchi Gallery bios. Even though paraphrased (though in many cases I don't think enough to avoid copyvio) they remain pseudy artcrit essays that are deeply unencyclopedic. It's not a good sign that this user fails to respond to comment. Extensive pruning is called for, as well as assessement for notability and copyright status of the whole contribution history. Gordonofcartoon 15:18, 30 May 2007 (UTC)

Please note your contributions have raised serious concerns. Because you write for the Saatchi Gallery, there is a conflict of interest. This means any edits in this area must be impeccable to avoid censure, which may lead to being blocked from editing. It is unacceptable to copy and paste text from the gallery site, even if you are able to clear copyright, because it is not the type of writing that is valid for wikipedia. We need simple factual text, that can be verified from reliable sources, that is written objectively, giving all relevant viewpoints, and is not original research or interpretation by the writer. Text should be referenced. I have posted links to guidelines at the top of this page, as well as an introduction to the wikipedia reference system. You might like to check out featured articles for models of article creation. Tyrenius 10:16, 31 May 2007 (UTC)
I'm dubious about the copyright status. According to the terms and conditions page at the Saatchi Gallery website, everything there is "Copyright 2003-2006 © The Saatchi Gallery". So unless Infoart is writing in the corporate capacity of The Saatchi Gallery, it's unlikely he/she - even if original author [1] - owns the copyright on the text. Gordonofcartoon 12:42, 31 May 2007 (UTC)
This editor also adds the same type of text to otherarticles, changing a stub to an unencyclopedic piece. I feel inclined to block should any further examples occur after this date.
To Gordonofcartoon (yes, I snickered), copyrighted material can be made available under GDFL, but it is best that there is written permission for it as it can be altered/amended and redistributed under our license terms. If The Saatchi Gallery is happy with that then all is okay. Anybody fancy asking them?LessHeard vanU 15:02, 31 May 2007 (UTC)
The problem is that it's not usable text, apart from brief quotations, and that comes under standard fair use anyway. Tyrenius 01:36, 1 June 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Action on your articles

Please note that your articles are now being edited to the particular wikipedia standards by a number of experienced editors. Contributions are appreciated, and I am sure that many of the articles will pass our notability requirements. It is not your fault as a new user that you do not realise that text that is acceptable, or normal, in the art world, is not the way we write wikipedia articles. I hope you will be able to study the requirements of policies which I have linked to in an earlier post, in order to contribute successfully.

However, in the short term it would be best if you waited and watched how the existing articles are being edited, before adding new material to them or starting any new articles. If you wish to add a new article, please create it first of all in a user sub-page. You can do this by clicking the link Draft article. Then let it be reviewed first by one of the team at work on Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Visual arts/Infoart articles, and let one of those editors put it into proper article space, when they have approved it. You are welcome to contact them, myself or another admin LessHeard vanU, if you need advice.

By following the above procedure, I think all parties will be able to achieve what is in their best interest. I don't want to be threatening, but I do have to warn you that continuation in the present mode will undoubtedly lead to some form of block on your editing access.

[edit] Systems House

Hello, this is a message from an automated bot. A tag has been placed on Systems House, by Freshacconci, another Wikipedia user, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. The tag claims that it should be speedily deleted because Systems House fits the criteria for speedy deletion for the following reason:

non-notable, has not been a practicing artist long enough to be notable

To contest the tagging and request that administrators wait before possibly deleting Systems House, please affix the template hangon to the page, and put a note on its talk page. If the article has already been deleted, see the advice and instructions at WP:WMD. [edit] Infoart Style & Copyright

Regarding your post under the above title on Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Visual arts/Infoart articles, thank you for taking an understanding approach to the feedback. I think you will be able to make a very valuable contribution. In fact, to have articles on artists who are exhibited in major Saatchi shows is itself a good asset for wikipedia as a source of information and knowledge. Please create an article/articles in your user space as agreed, and get editorial input from established users. Wikipedia has its own micro-culture which needs some adjustment. The premise is that we don't put original content in articles. Wikipedia is a digest of existing established sources, which should be referenced to prove where material originated. [edit] Liu Wei

Are you able to clarify confusion between artists of this name? See article talk page. Tyrenius 05:16, 4 June 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Re: deleted articles

As far as I understand it, you can recreate the articles as long as they have the improvements per your note on my userpage. Speedy delete simply means that the articles didn't seem to be notable enough, but if you feel otherwise, you can redo it and go from there. I'm not an administrator so I can't undelete, just nominate. I'm not opposed to either article being recreated, and maybe I was too quick to speedy delete it. Freshacconci 13:04, 2 June 2007 (UTC)

The request for speedy delete of Xiang Jing was declined by the reviewing admin anyway.[2] I agree, as I think there is sufficient notability shown. Tyrenius 14:10, 2 June 2007 (UTC)
I've seen your comments at Freshacconci and Tyrenius' talkpages. It is possible to have articles undeleted and then moved to your sandbox, where you can work on them. I know it is possible, but I would need to check out how to do it first (I've not been an Admin long).
I would suggest that you look over the pruned versions of the other artists that are being reviewed to get a feel on how they should appear (and also check out other WP entries for other artists). Since you are now contributing in the appropriate manner, and you are obviously an enthusiastic and knowledgeable editor, I will remove the warning earlier on this page. LessHeard vanU 19:30, 2 June 2007 (UTC) ps. I've also started your user page, so people can navigate to you easier. Please amend as you see fit. Cheers

[edit] Feedback

I have started this section after Infoart's request for feedback so that editors can make observations which would be helpful for his future editing. Tyrenius 13:34, 3 June 2007 (UTC)

Wikilinks (internal links with [[). Link things which the reader might want to follow up relevant to the subject. Dates: don't link isolated years or months usually, unless there is something special about them, but do link day and month combinations. 25 January 2007 or January 25, 2007. Also 25 January or January 25. This linking is to allow user preferences to work for the date display format of their choice.

External links should not be in main article text, only in External links section. The exception is where the external link is used as a reference, but it should then contain the information being used. If someone exhibited at a gallery, then it is not a reference if there is a link to the gallery which does not show the artist exhibiting there. However, it is better to use inline citations for references, as in the ref guide higher up on this page.

State facts. Don't make interpretations of facts. See here where I have kept the facts and removed the interpretation.[3] Also in this article the China News info needs to be incorporated in the article and the external link turned into a reference. Notability needs to be established through such independent sources. If info has come from e.g. Saatchi Gallery biog, then there should be a reference inserted to show this is the source, so other editors/readers can view and check this. See WP:V.

Normal biog layout is to state the birth date in the lead section (or first sentence), but to put the birth place at the beginning of the main text.

Don't put "exhibited in many international exhibitions". Just state the exhibitions and it should be obvious that there are many and they are international. See WP:Peacock.

Don't use single apostrophes '. They exclude the item from the search result. Use double apostrophes ". An exception is a quote within a quote, where single apostrophes for the inner quote avoids confusion. Names of shows and visual art works should be in italics, created by two single apostrophes at each end of the title . Or highlight the text and use the toolbar above the edit box to do it.

[edit] New draft articles

I've submitted 2 new draft articles for approval - Amanda Ross-Ho and Aurel Schmidt. I hope they better fit the criteria. I think i've gone about this in the correct way, but i might have just replaced the first article with the second - I'm not entirely sure how to correctly post draft articles, if someone could clarify this for me i'd be very greatful! I used the link in Tyrenius' post above as I can't spot any other way of doing it, but now that seems to take me to my latest posted article rather than a blank page... Sorry if this has caused any confusion or muddled up any pages. I'm sure I'm just being a bit dense about it! Infoart 15:52, 6 June 2007 (UTC)

I've deleted the old Draft page to avoid confusion. I won't go into the technicalities! You now have:
You can create more sub pages by following this coding. You can replace the text "Draft article 1" with your own choice of text to create a different name for a new user sub page. Each sub page also has its own talk page, so make sure you know which page you're talking on, as talk on sub pages might get missed, if editors haven't got it watchlisted. Tyrenius 17:52, 6 June 2007 (UTC)
Please read the above section "Feedback" as you have not followed some of the points. Tyrenius 18:17, 6 June 2007 (UTC)
Thanks for the further feedback and help. I want to get this right. I've amended the 2 drafts mentioned above and added some new ones which hopefully satisfy Wiki requuirements. They are as follows:
I also made minor edits to Carsten Nicolai, Boris Mikhailov and Conrad Shawcross - I took care to use appropriate information and not violate any rules regarding facts vs. assumptions. I hope this is ok. Infoart 16:03, 15 June 2007 (UTC)
I have been putting articles on the draft pages as requested so that they can be checked and approved - I appreciate that they may need some more work which is fine (I will take another look and sort out better sources) - but can someone please give me some feedback on the ones above? And once they are completed is someone else going to put them in wiki properly or am i supposed to do this myself? Thanks.Infoart 11:13, 28 June 2007 (UTC)
I will look over them this evening (BST). Once they are okayed/edited then I guess you are able to move them into Wiki space. Speak to you soon. LessHeard vanU 12:49, 28 June 2007 (UTC)
Regarding the draft articles, there is still too much subjective/interpretive text. If it comes from one of the sources then please quote/cite it, otherwise... it has to go. In the manner of style, it is fine. I have wikilinked the various educational establishments and galleries as, since they are relatively permanent, there may yet be articles written about them if not already. I also try to include names of nations in relation to places; in an international encyclopedia, where there should be uniformity of appearance, the familiar should have the same information provided as the obscure. Hopefully, one of the arts project related editors will also look over these articles. Don't be afraid to go ask them on their talkpages. LessHeard vanU 19:56, 28 June 2007 (UTC)
I've edited the first four. Check the history to see comments. I agree with LessHeard vanU re subjective text. You keep on making an interpretation or a comparison, but who says it's the correct one, or the only one? Editors are not allowed to do that, per WP:NOR and WP:V. Find a source and reference the observation tightly and then it would be acceptable. I really recommend you use inline citations per the guide above. Or see Everyone I Have Ever Slept With 1963-1995 for a slightly different format, which I find easier. You will see that I have proved the material came from a proper source by the reference, so anyone else can check up on it. Click on the edit tab to see the coding, which you can then copy and adapt. Also please expand beyond the Saatchi Gallery as the only source. There is material from other sources which can be included. Tyrenius 03:40, 29 June 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Conrad Shawcross

I have just looked at your recent edit. You are making editorial interpretations, not sticking to facts. I have cut this back. Furthermore, you have not got any reference in the article to justify the addition. Please see the reference guide higher on this page for how to insert inline citations. Please revise your edits accordingly. See also WP:PEACOCK, and understate rather than inflate, e.g. the use of the word "gigantic". That's meaningless. Give the size, if you will. Tyrenius 16:53, 15 June 2007 (UTC)

I've done some more work on it. A thing I would advise is that Infoart should Google the artist's name rather than defaulting to the Saatchi Gallery. Often, as in this case, there are other sources that are more detailed and more down-to-earth in their descriptions. Gordonofcartoon 18:09, 15 June 2007 (UTC)
Sorry for causing difficulties, I will refrain from making any further edits to existing articles.Infoart 11:08, 28 June 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Charles Saatchi

I saw your note to Tyrenius re: Charles Saatchi. I'm not sure something can be permanently edited out of an article. Since anyone can edit wikipedia, anything can be added. It's up to vigilant editors to catch the vandalism and issue warnings. Vandals can eventually be blocked from editing, but vandalism will always be an issue. Occasionally, a page can be removed and an administrator can remove all traces of that article, especially if the article is libelous. However, in the case of Saatchi, he's too much of a public figure to be removed from wikipedia (and I'm guessing that's not what's wanted here anyway). He'll always have an article, and will probably always be a target for vandals. That's both the nature of fame, and wikipedia, I'm afraid. Probably not the answer you wanted. I won't contact the email you gave Tyrenius. I'm not an administrator and perhaps there is something else that can be done. But in my limited experience on wikipedia, I'm fairly certain that there's little that can be done but revert the vandalism as it happens. There are certainly a few editors who have the Charles Saatchi page on their watch-list, so changes will be monitored. I've added it to my watch-list and I sent a warning to the last vandal. If he keeps it up, I'll report him to admins who can block him. Freshacconci 00:33, 29 June 2007 (UTC)

There is a bit of a difficulty here. While some of the hostile version is outright false, much of it is just as reliably sourced (from here) as the material that is cited (from here), which ought to be just as much a concern over bias as it presents Okamoto as the bad guy. The trick is getting the balance. Gordonofcartoon 01:01, 29 June 2007 (UTC)
I've just dropped in from wikibreak. I'll notify a couple of admins. Please continue talk on Talk:Charles Saatchi to centralise discussion. I will email the gallery. Tyrenius 01:53, 29 June 2007 (UTC)
Email sent. Tyrenius 03:40, 29 June 2007 (UTC)
per the discussion here and at the Charles Saatchi talkpage I am considering notifying the Wikipedia:Biographies of living persons/Noticeboard of Mr Saatchi's concerns. I would prefer to be able to note you as the person who advised us of these concerns, in case anyone requires clarification. Please indicate your willingness here or at the Saatchi page. If you don't want to be included then just reply here. LessHeard vanU 19:20, 29 June 2007 (UTC)
I am in dialogue with the Saatchi gallery by email, and will report the outcome. At the moment the problem seems to have been contained satisfactorily, although how the material is dealt with, and what if any of it is included still needs to be addressed by editors. (When I've concluded emailing, I will be returning to wikibreak!) Tyrenius 22:01, 29 June 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Andre Butzer and André Butzer articles

Hi Inforart, Two articles about the same person were created nearly at the same time. I added merge tags on both. The Andre Butzer content should be merged to André Butzer and then a redirect added to Andre Butzer to send the user to André Butzer. It looks like a single diacritical acute e (é) separates them. A cursory look at both articles gives me the impression that the material is very similar. Thanks, Group29 14:59, 14 November 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Notability of Quentin Curry

Hello, this is a message from an automated bot. A tag has been placed on Quentin Curry, by another Wikipedia user, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. The tag claims that it should be speedily deleted because Quentin Curry seems to be about a person, group of people, band, club, company, or web content, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is notable: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not assert the subject's importance or significance may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable.

[edit] Speedy deletion of Molly Larkey

A tag has been placed on Molly Larkey requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a person or group of people, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is notable: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. [edit] New articles

I see you're writing some new articles. Most of them look properly sourced. A few, though, in my opinion, don't fully meet the requirements of WP:BIO. Please make sure that notability is cast-iron before creating an article. Having said that, thanks for all your hard work and perhaps you'd also like to contribute to some articles about artists with no connection to Charles Saatchi ;)--Ethicoaestheticist (talk) 23:43, 22 March 2008 (UTC)

Oh, and don't forget to add category tags to the articles.--Ethicoaestheticist (talk) 23:53, 22 March 2008 (UTC)

Lists of shows should begin with the oldest, not the newest and be formatted with bullet points (created by using an asterisk), as in:

* Show1
* Show2
* Show3

Which results in:

 • Show1
 • Show2
 • Show3

There should not be a line space between the listed items.

 • Thanks for the information, I will keep it in mind from now on. Infoart (talk) 12:40, 23 March 2008 (UTC)

Hi, glad to see you around and still contributing. When doing the brief bio of an artist, especially from America, could you please always indicate either the artists nationality or nation of birth (next to City or State or whatever) as this really helps Google searches. Someone may know that the subject is American but not the city of birth or where they were educated - having the nation(ality) thus helps the search engine enquiry. Cheers.
