Dan McCarthy (born 1962) is an United States artist based in New York.

McCarthy was born in Honolulu, Hawaii.

Dan McCarthy is a painter who uses an unusual handling of oil paint to make images that give ordinary situations a sense of fantasy. McCarthy’s canvasses look like watercolours due to his loose and fluid use of paint, he builds up thin washes of colour to create delicate line and tone. Common subjects are normal people, sometimes engaged in casual activities such as swimming and skating, and nature in the form of birds, trees and mountains. McCarthy’s paintings include a slight symbolic tendency which adds depth to his work.

He has exhibited at galleries such as Anton Kern in New York, Galerie Aurel Scheibler in Cologne and the Saatchi Gallery in London.
