[edit] Talk

Why does this exist? There is already a template for film ratings, Template:Infobox Film rating. This template is one of the most obtrusive templates I have ever seen. If you want to have movie ratings, you should just use the much smaller film rating template. If you want to see why it is obtrusive just look at The Godfather (film). 160.79.140.225 17:11, 21 June 2006 (UTC)

This template allows linking to articles that discuss that county's ratings systems, like MPAA film rating system (although only a handful have such links currently, it's at least an option this way). Also, this listing of countries encourages editors to fill out ratings for countries that might not have been considered for being listed. -- Ned Scott 07:56, 3 July 2006 (UTC)
No Merge per our long talk on WP:FILM talk page. --Shane (talk/contrib) 07:25, 31 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Size

If this survives TfD this really needs to be shrunk - there is far too much whitespace, and the font might look better a little smaller. violet/riga (t) 22:18, 4 August 2006 (UTC)

I'm not really sure I follow you on that one.. this is a hell of a lot smaller than it used to be [1], as well as it being much smaller than most infoboxes. You won't actually save any space by getting rid of the "white spaces", since the box will only be as wide as the longest country name/ rating line. I could see maybe shortening the names of the different countries, or maybe making some of them take up two rows (which.. would save horizontal space, but make it look rather ugly). Maybe you have an example of what you had in mind? -- Ned Scott 07:25, 5 August 2006 (UTC)
You're talking horizontal space - I was talking vertical space. violet/riga (t) 08:06, 5 August 2006 (UTC)
Why not to put them in 2 columns? it would be more compact (half of the current vertical size) and as the values are always just 2-3 characters then "doubling" the width shouldn't be big issue. Same time we could change "United States" to "USA" and "United Kingdom" to "UK" as these are top longest names which have widely recognised abbreviations. --TarmoK 08:56, 17 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] alphabetic order

Shouldn't the country names be alphabetically ordered, now it's quite a mess to find particluar country --TarmoK 08:56, 17 September 2006 (UTC)

I recommend also an alphabetical order. Now it's very time-consuming to search for a certain country. This goes for filling out the template for an article as well as for the reader of the article when there are many ratings listed.
Also the production country of the film is usually known (from infobox or intro of the article) and can be looked up in an alphabetical list. So there is no need to put the most important (which would be the production country and major markets) countries on top.
Bisco 22:27, 29 September 2006 (UTC)
I've sorted all countries alphabetically now in the template and the usage code (although the sequence in the code doesn't seem to matter). It didn't work when I previewed the edit but after saving, the template has been "updated", see The Godfather, Breezy. --Bisco 02:28, 5 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Missing countries

The code is too complicated for me to edit anything. Please can someone add Spain. Bisco 22:34, 29 September 2006 (UTC)

Spain was included in the template and only missing in the displayed usage code. I've added it there. --Bisco 02:30, 5 October 2006 (UTC)
The code is too complicated for me too. Can someone please add Vietnam, Venezuela and Iran? Thanks. Thricecube 18:46, 25 May 2007 (UTC)
I added vietnam.--Esprit15d • talkcontribs 16:47, 24 January 2008 (UTC)

[edit] List of ratings on the template page

I think it would be useful to have a link to this Motion picture rating system on the template page. Or include a list of all the ratings. So that everyone uses the correct name or abbreviation of the rating. For instance: IMDb states for a rating for West Germany "16" but it must be "FSK 16". Bisco 22:53, 29 September 2006 (UTC) I would like to have a list of current and old abbreviations for ratings on the page, sorted by country. A much simpler version of Motion picture rating system.Bisco 20:49, 30 September 2006 (UTC)

I realised that "FSK 16" is the label that is usually printed on the media itself (DVD box etc). On the FSK homepage the rating is called "Freigegeben ab 16 Jahren".
Bisco 23:36, 29 September 2006 (UTC)
I've have to correct myself further. "FSK 16" is just an abbreviation for "Freigegeben ab 16 Jahren". I realised also it might be that (the above mentioned) "16" in the IMDb is the name of an old rating which became later "FSK 16".Bisco 20:49, 30 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Wow

It's been a while since I've looked at this template, and it looks really great. Good work to everyone who's been maintaining it. -- Ned Scott 07:56, 7 November 2006 (UTC)

It's also huge.--D-Boy 05:55, 31 December 2006 (UTC)
Eh, it's only as large as the number of ratings one includes. -- Ned Scott 06:12, 31 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Now you can hide this box if you don't like it

If you have an account, you can set your skin file to hide this template. Add the following:

#filmratingsbox {display:none;}

on its own line anywhere in either your User:YOURNAME/monobook.css or your User:YOURNAME/common.css files.

Note: this probably won't work for more than one ratings box on a page, but I would think that's rare. Happy hiding. --h2g2bob 19:14, 27 April 2007 (UTC)

I'm not sure, but what if you use 'filmratingsbox' as a class instead of as an id? You should be able to hide all ratings boxes on a page, shouldn't you? An element can have multiple classes, so it can still also belong to class "toccolours". Phaunt 10:28, 26 May 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Canada

[edit] Canada BC/SK

According to this article, British Columbia and Saskatchewan have merged their ratings. I plan to change the template argument from {{{Canada (British Columbia)}}} to {{{Canada (BC/SK)}}} and the output from "Canada (Brit.Col):" to "Canada (BC/SK):". I'll leave the old template argument in place for backward compatibility. Cleduc 21:32, 30 April 2007 (UTC)

done. Cleduc 03:01, 25 May 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Recent addition of Canada

Unless somebody's heard something I haven't, there is no unified ratings system for theatrical releases of films. I think the recently added Canada parameter should be removed. Cleduc 23:10, 24 May 2007 (UTC)

removed. Cleduc 02:55, 25 May 2007 (UTC)
I actually just came here to add Canada, after seeing the template on the page for The Marine. I am guessing that whomever added it before thought as I do: I.E. that since many of Canada's regions might have the same rating, that we could save space by listing a Canada rating followed by any exceptions. This would save a number of lines for most recent films. —MJBurrageTALK • 01:48, 11 November 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Technical issue with the image displacement

I figured I'd give y'all some examples of the sort of problems I'm talking about. I'll use the example article Silent Hill (film), which is where I noticed the problem first.

Now, take a look at this version of the article. Everything seems fine, yes? Okay, now take a look at the very next version, which added the ratings infobox. Note how the image that was once at the top of the Plot section has now been forced down a significant amount, despite the fact that the only change was the addition of the infobox. Obviously, this is a problem; it makes the article look like crap, which is very bad. I'm sure there's some way to sort this out via some technical changes, but I haven't the slightest idea what they would be. -- Y|yukichigai (ramble argue check) 00:21, 20 September 2007 (UTC)

Collapsing tables would help as this would allow a toggle whether to show or hide the details. Some variants of {{Infobox animanga}} has this feature. Special tricks such as <br clear="all"> and break tag variants may also help bring some sanity to section boundaries and images. Will have to have some time to test some options further before unleashing any infobox changes, though. Dl2000 03:12, 9 October 2007 (UTC)

[edit] UCCB Movie ratings

One of the oldest rating systems in the United States is from the US Conference of Catholic Bishops. [2] As approximately 20% of Americans are Catholic -- and many readers may be interested in the "moral" rating on a film -- I'd like to add an option for including the USCCB ratings under the US section. Any objections?? And if someone more experienced with templates can do it for me, all the better!--GodBlessYou55 (talk) 20:46, 28 April 2008 (UTC)

I've made a test template that is working which adds a place for the USCCB ranking. I'll make the change next week unless someone objects between now and then. --GodBlessYou55 (talk) 16:44, 15 May 2008 (UTC)

Done. Checked. Appears to be working fine.--GodBlessYou55 (talk) 20:34, 1 June 2008 (UTC)
