[edit] Usage

This infobox takes a number of parameters:

{{Infobox UK Legislation
|short_title=
|parliament=
|long_title=
|statute_book_chapter=
|introduced_by=
|territorial_extent=
|royal_assent=
|commencement=
|repeal_date=
|amendments=
|related_legislation=
|repealing_legislation=
|status=
|original_text=
|activeTextDocId=
|legislation_history=
|}}
short title
the short title of the legislation, displayed at the top of the infobox. Should preferably be the same as the article title.
parliament
the name of the parliament which made the legislation. This will be linked.
long title
the long title of the legislation (some are extremely long and thus clutter up the infobox).
statute book chapter
the chapter within the statute book where the legislation is to be found
introduced by
who first introduced the legislation into parliament. This could be a link to an individual politician, or a political party if you do not know the individual. One could also mention whether it was a government-supported bill or a private member's bill.
territorial extent
the parts of the United Kingdom to which the act extends.
royal assent
the date the legislation recieved Royal Assent (only applicable in Commonwealth countries, other users may wish to copy and modify the template).
commencement
the date(s) at which the legislation was brought into force (but note that for acts with more than three or four commencement dates this is inappropriate to use).
amendments
internal links to amending or repealing legislation, or even a list of years in which the legislation has been modified (note that for acts with a great deal of amending or repealing legislation only the most significant pieces of legislation should be listed).
related legislation
self-explanatory.
status
this can be one of five values, "Current" (for legislation still in force), "Amended" (for legislation which has been substantially modified by separate legislation), "Repealed" (for legislation which has been repealed, or is no longer in force), "Not_yet_in_force" (for legislation which has not been commenced yet), or "Not_fully_in_force" (for legislation which has been partially commenced); this defaults to Unknown if no value is entered.
original text
link to the text of the legislation as originally enacted.
activeTextDocId
identification number of the legislation in the Statute Law Database, allowing linking to the text of it as amended from time to time.
legislation history
link to information about the passage of the legislation through the legislature.

[edit] Status

How do I add "Not yet in force" to the status field? I am not familiar with the code used on that section, so I am unsure about how to amend it. Thanks. Road Wizard 17:12, 30 July 2006 (UTC)

Through experimenting in my sandbox, I have now managed to work out how to add the code. However, before I add the option to the real template, should we discuss which options are necessary? The current options are:
  • Current
  • Amended
  • Repealed
I would also suggest the following two possibilities:
  • Not yet in force - for those Acts that are completely inactive and awaiting commencement orders.
  • Not fully in force - I am a little unsure of this one, but is there a way we can note that not all sections have commenced as yet? This could be either here or in another part of the template.
Are there any comments on these? Thanks. Road Wizard 00:13, 31 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Comments on the template

This is a much needed template. Some suggestions I would make are:

  • For repealed legislation, needs to state date of repeal and repealing legislation. We could also do with colour coding to show prospective, in force and repealed acts.
  • Needs a link for editing the template.
  • I would split out the info about the instant act and the "contents" info on all UK acts. I would put the latter in a separate template at the bottom of the page in a collapsible form. I think that's more standard wiki-style.

I will not attempt any of this as I have the aesthetic sense of a gnat.Cutler 08:54, 19 October 2007 (UTC)

There should also be a link to the Statute Law Database page. Further, all new bills are now tracked in some detail at the parliament website (e.g. here) so there could be a link to the history of passage through parliament.Cutler 08:58, 19 October 2007 (UTC)

Please see Template talk:British legislation lists, Acts for my suggestion for a Navbox separate from the infobox.Cutler 20:30, 19 October 2007 (UTC)

[edit] New proposal

I have created a new template at Template:Infobox UK Legislation/temp. This is how it looks though I have not ironed out all probs nor added an "edit" control.

This is a very useful template and one that has been sorely needed for some time. Its a much better idea to have the UK legislation template at the foot of the page. If possible without infringing copyright it would be nice to have a small Royal Coat of Arms or the portcullis of Parliament at the top. The template could probably also be adapted to cover statutory instruments, all that would be needed would be an entry allowing for the insertion of the enabling act for the instrument in question. I intend using this template soon on my articles here and here. Ravenseft 08:44, 14 November 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Two versions?

We appear to have 2 separate versions of the same template; {{Infobox UK legislation}} and {{Infobox UK Legislation}} (notice the capitalisation of "legislation"). The usage note appears on the L talk page, but the template links to the l talk page. Is there some reason for having two templates? Road Wizard (talk) 13:41, 24 May 2008 (UTC)

As this template has been updated more recently I have redirected the other template here and fixed the navbar links to point to the right pages. Road Wizard (talk) 14:18, 24 May 2008 (UTC)
