[edit] Purpose and use of the template

This template has replaced the infoboxes that were in use for Greek cities and towns (see e.g. the histories of the articles of Alexandroupoli, Thessaloniki, Pyrgos, Elis).

[edit] The used fields

• box_width: optional to set infobox width (default= "width: 23em;").
• name: the name, as commonly used in English. If there's no common English name: the modern Greek name, transliterated according to the UN/ELOT system.
• name_local: the Greek name (Modern Greek, not Katharevousa)

• image_map: image file name of the location map. If there is no location map for the city, use the prefecture map.
• periph: English name of the periphery the town is in
• prefec: English name of the prefecture the town is in. The word "Prefecture" should be piped out (see Thessaloniki example).
• province: English name of the province the town is in. I left these blank because of the vague status of Greek provinces.
• population: census data
• population_as_of: year of the census
• population_ref: source of the population data (see [1] for the 2001 census. See note below. *pop_dens: population divided by area
• area: in km². I'm not sure what to use here, municipality or city proper (I have no data anyway).
• elevation: in m above mean sea level (for town centre)
• lat_deg, lat_min, lat_hem, lon_deg, lon_min, lon_hem: coordinates
• postal_code: one number for small towns, a range for bigger ones
• area_code: telephone area code
• licence: car licence code
• mayor: maybe leave this one out for smaller towns
• website: link, see example
• flag_reg: image file name for regional flag or symbol, such as Vergina sun.

In the 2001 census data use the column Πραγματικός πληθυσμός - "real population", and not the municipality figure (e.g. ΔΗΜΟΣ ΙΕΡΑΣ ΠΟΛΗΣ ΜΕΣΟΛΟΓΓΙΟΥ) but the "municipal department" (Δ.Δ.Μεσολογγίου). For an explanation see below (taken from User_talk:Markussep#Hello_from_Makedonas):

I'm going to change this, I think it's more in line with municipalities in other countries to use the municipality population (and area). So that would be the figure after ΔΗΜΟΣ ΙΕΡΑΣ ΠΟΛΗΣ ΜΕΣΟΛΟΓΓΙΟΥ, 17,988 in this case. Markussep 19:59, 23 January 2006 (UTC)

On December 16, 2004, The World Factbook, a publication of the United States' Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) added an entry for the European Union. [2] According to the CIA, the European Union was added because the EU "continues to accrue more nation-like characteristics for itself". Their reasoning was explained in this small statement in the introduction:

The evolution of the European Union (EU) from a regional economic agreement among six neighboring states in 1951 to today's supranational organization of 25 countries across the European continent stands as an unprecedented phenomenon in the annals of history... ... for such a large number of nation-states to cede some of their sovereignty to an overarching entity is truly unique... ... the EU ... has many of the attributes associated with independent nations: its own flag, anthem, founding date, and currency, as well as an incipient common foreign and security policy in its dealings with other nations. In the future, many of these nation-like characteristics are likely to be expanded. Thus, inclusion of basic intelligence on the EU has been deemed appropriate as a new, separate entity in The World Factbook. However, because of the EU's special status, this description is placed after the regular country entries.

I might add that EU citizens have EU- numberplates, -passports, drivinglicense, the EU institutions, and regular election. I hope you support the small extension I made... all the best Lear 21 18:31, 24 October 2006 (UTC)

Strong Oppose. The EU is neither a country or a soverign state, so its inclusion in the line describing the country is misplaced, therefore it should be removed. --Bob 00:05, 25 October 2006 (UTC)

Please stop reverting the addition in country column and reconsider your stance. For an overwhelming number of reasons EU is already a country-like entity and deserves to stand there, like in any official affairs. all the best Lear 21 10:56, 25 October 2006 (UTC)

I don't think the EU should be in town infoboxes. The EU is not a country, it's an entity in which 25 countries cooperate. Or as the EU article states it: "confederation of independent states". My driving licence may look similar to the licences of other countries (it says it's the model of the European communities), but it says "Koninkrijk der Nederlanden", not "European Union". The Union isn't mentioned on it at all. Markussep 19:48, 25 October 2006 (UTC)

Can someone add conditional code for the city flag and/or coat of arms? Some cities do have flags and I'd like to include them. Thanks. Miskin 23:47, 25 October 2006 (UTC)

done, with parameters to size the image correctly. I wasn't sure if you wanted it side-by-side with the map though, as is is ok. If you like, I could add in the flag parameters. Also maybe it shouldn't explicitely state "coat of arms" (if it does already). Some towns have flags, others have symbols, and for the ones that have nothing I was thinking putting a decorative image. Or maybe add a conditional field that wouldn't state c.o.a.? Use img_coa for the image without the Image: bit, use img_coa_size to determine the desired size of the image and img_coa_legend to describe what the image is. An example is above with Athens. --Bob 00:41, 26 October 2006 (UTC)

Somebody wanted to also introduce a small image of the Vergina Sun in Macedonia articles. I've tentatively added a conditional field "flag_reg=", it takes the image file name of a flag of the region/prefecture/periphery/whatever, to be displayed in the top right corner of the heading, opposite the small Greek flag. I am not sure it works completely. I tried it with Thessaloniki (unsaved). The flag turns up alright but so does an unexpected "]" Valentinian ^{(talk) / (contribs)} 10:40, 8 November 2006 (UTC)

I just added a feature that creates a map if coordinates are given. I tested it for several towns, it looks like I got the positions right. If you see a dot at the wrong place, let me know. The coordinates might be wrong then. Markussep 19:01, 6 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] New Template?

I had some free time, and tried making a new template for the Greek cities with my limited code ability. I felt they were more deserving of a better looking and more informative one, like some of the other template Infoboxes for others cities on wiki. Here's the link to it: Greek Dimos Please check it out. I've tried all the fields and everything seems to work, but if you see something that needs correcting you can go ahead and correct. [edit] New dot-on-a-map template

When building {{Infobox German Location}}, it was necessary to bring over the {{Lageplan}} template from the German wiki to display the map with the location dot. Infobox Town GR and the new Infobox Greek Dimos are the only other templates on the English wiki that use Lageplan. Only recently, I discovered a template on the English wiki that already does this job: {{Location map}}. The people behind this template have already made up a series of settings to cover different locations (see template page for list), including Germany and Greece. The Location Map template has already been integrated into a number of templates such as {{Infobox_Swiss_town}}, {{Infobox_London_place}} and will probably soon be part of {{Infobox City}}. This makes the Lageplan template almost redundant, and I am thinking of removing it from the German infobox and, if it is removed from the Greek one, disabling it altogether. Location map has a number of new cool features (optional label text, a bit more user-friendly than Lageplan) but there are some features of Lageplan that it does not have (mouseover-text for the dot, error map if bad co-ordinates are given). Give it a try and if you decide to use it instead of Lageplan, please let me know. - 52 Pickup 16:45, 28 January 2007 (UTC)
