Total burials 2463, of which 430 are unnamed Unknown burials 2

How does one say 2, and the other says 430? Aren't they measuring the number of unknowns? Sherurcij (Speaker for the Dead) 15:08, 21 October 2006 (UTC)

  • Different levels of "unknown". The 430 are unnamed - who they are/were is not known, although other information (nationality, rank, unit, other - for want of a better word - fragments). The 2 are unknown unknowns. They're assumed to be soldiers, but the nationality or any other information is completely lost. They might not even be soldiers, but they are being treated as soldiers, having been found on a battlefield. ЯEDVERS 15:14, 21 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Modifying the template

If someone has a spare few minutes, could they please modify the template (I've no idea where to begin) to add numbers of soldiers commemorated. The Tyne Cot Memorial Wall, for instance, commemorates 34,869 casualties which aren't mentioned. The template just talks about the 11,000 or so burials. There may be instances where there are no actual graves, just numbers commemorated so the template might reflect this. Ideally, thus:

Total burials:
Total commemorated: (ie those commemorated here with no known grave)
Unidentified burials: (ie burials of unknowns - a sub-set of total burials)
