[edit] Optional Parameters

I would think that some optional parameters would be good for this template. I think that a Hall of Fame parameter (as used in Template:Infobox NFL player) would be good. Thoughts? //Tecmobowl 16:45, 24 June 2007 (UTC)

The stars are kind of dumb--Yankees10 00:32, 28 June 2007 (UTC)Yankees10

I think the stars are fine, personally. - Masonpatriot 14:32, 10 July 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Additional Data?

I think it would be helpful to add more data to the template, such as college and draft round (like in the active player infobox), especially as more contemporary players retire. Also, info such as height, weight and place of birth may not be bad to include either. Thoughts? - Masonpatriot 14:32, 10 July 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Which version?

I prefer the one at this link. I think it looks better and it doesn't affect anything. Any thoughts? Soxrock 15:37, 22 July 2007 (UTC)

Hm, after re-looking at both, they both are pretty much the same, it seems. Only thing is the other version shows all that supplementary info after the box, but we can surely just plug that back in. Either version's fine for me, just thought I'd have this go here before any edit-warring occurred. Wizardman 16:32, 22 July 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for your opinion. I'll change it back at once unless someone else protests it Soxrock 17:18, 22 July 2007 (UTC)

When this template is used in an article, the only visible difference between the two versions (before and after my edit) was that my edit used font-size:95% – the same font size used in {{Infobox MLB player}} and many other infoboxes.
The remaining differences only show up on the template page, not within an article using the template:
1. The documentation was moved to a subpage and substantially expanded: all the parameters were documented, the team colors chart from Infobox MLB player was included, and an example of the template was given.
2. All parameters names are shown in the cells they occupy within the template.
3. To illustrate which cells are affected by the background color parameters, the template page uses  #ccccff  to represent bgcolor1 and  #ffcccc  to represent bgcolor2. These colors do not appear when the template is used in an article (where they may be set via bgcolor1 and bgcolor2).
Therefore, I will restore all of my edits except font-size:95%. This will result in improved documentation of the template and absolutely no change in how the template displays when used within an article. I'll add a note to the documentation about those colors being for illustration purposes only. -- Zyxw 22:03, 22 July 2007 (UTC)

Thank you. Now it looks perfectly good. I just didn't like the font, it looked weird and I was like "wtf? Why did this change?" Soxrock 22:22, 22 July 2007 (UTC)

[edit] How hide stats section?

Is it possible? I'm new to infobox editing. For Negro League players, stats are unreliable and this section doesn't help. Guanxi 04:31, 30 July 2007 (UTC)

Presumptuously, just don't fill them in. Just add the | at the end of each section, like :

Reggie Jackson
Reggie Jackson
outfielder
Born: May 18, 1946 (1946-05-18) (age 62)
Batted: Left Threw: Left
MLB debut
June 9, 1967
for the Kansas City Athletics
Final game
October 4, 1987
for the Oakland Athletics
Career statistics
'
'
'
Teams
Career highlights and awards
Member of the National
Baseball Hall of Fame
Elected     1993
Vote     93.6% (first ballot)

Eh, best I could do. Good luck then, I guess, sorry I couldn't fix it. Soxrock 16:29, 1 August 2007 (UTC)

I don't think it's necessarily bad to just have MLB stats for NL players that have MLB stats, so long as they are notated as such. I agree that it would be helpful to be able to blank the stats sections for other Negro Leaguers, like Josh Gibson, etc. so we can keep the infoboxes consistent. - Masonpatriot 21:52, 1 August 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Change "MLB Debut" to "Debut", for Negro Leaguers

The infobox works fine for Negro Leaguers except for a couple minor changes. This one is the biggest problem. Can we just change it to "Debut"? Guanxi 04:32, 30 July 2007 (UTC)

Well, I'd suggest creating a neutral box. You know, something like {{Infobox:Baseball. That might work out Soxrock 17:28, 1 August 2007 (UTC)
Also this would help clear up issues with 19th century ball players who debuted and/or played their entire career in the National Association of Professional Base Ball Players, currently not recognized as a Major League. All those players are still considered Major League players, and the stats are recognized by most online authorities, i.e. retrosheet.org and baseball-reference.com. It looks odd to have a player's full stats, but have his MLB debut, in many cases, several years into his actual career. Maybe a template that covered both these players and Negro League players would resolve both issues at once. Neonblak (talk) 00:40, 26 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Add Hall of Fame link

Can this template be added? {{bbhof}}

[edit] Career highlights and awards

Is there anyway to hide this? What if the player really doesn't have any highlights? — Steven Andrew Miller (talk) 03:00, 1 September 2007 (UTC)

{{editprotected}} I need to make an edit to solve a problem with infobox colors--Yankees10 (talk) 01:33, 11 December 2007 (UTC)

As the article is protected, you should copy the source to a sandbox page (like User:Yankees10/Sanbbox), make the change there, and test it. Then add an editprotected request, and an admin will copy your new code back to this template. — Carl (CBM · talk) 22:44, 13 December 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Protected?

Any idea why this template is protected?►Chris NelsonHolla! 17:04, 12 January 2008 (UTC)

According to the protection log, it is protected because it is a highly-used template, i.e. is used on hundreds, even thousands of articles, so vandalism to the template would have a serious effect. Wizardman 17:20, 12 January 2008 (UTC)
Can we unprotect it momentarily? I'd like to make an edit giving the infobox neutral colors per this discussion: Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Baseball/Archive_5#Neutral Colors in Infobox.►Chris NelsonHolla! 17:53, 12 January 2008 (UTC)
Sure, I'll unprotect it for a little while. Wizardman 17:58, 12 January 2008 (UTC)
Perhaps you could tell us the changes to be made and we can do it? That way you don't have to coordinate your availability with admin availability. (I've been holding off adding infoboxes until this whole color thing gets updated.)--Fabrictramp (talk) 18:21, 17 January 2008 (UTC)
The problem is I'm not really an infobox expert, so I kind of need to get in there and see what I'm doing. Can we maybe unprotect it for the next few hours or something? Vandalism can't be that bad here.►Chris NelsonHolla! 19:49, 17 January 2008 (UTC)
It isn't an issue of vandalism. This template seems to be transcluded thousands of times. Each edit to this template requires all the pages that transclude it to be recompiled. So the right way to develop new code is to copy this code to a sandbox (User:Chrisjnelson/Sandbox) and test it there. Then, when you are ready, use an editprotected request to ask an admin to copy your working code to the live template. Then all the other pages only get recompiled once. — Carl (CBM · talk) 20:26, 17 January 2008 (UTC)
I don't really know what transcluded means. But anyway, this infobox should have its own sandbox like Template:Infobox NFLactive.►Chris NelsonHolla! 20:39, 17 January 2008 (UTC)
When you put {{Infobox MLB retired}} in an article, that's Wikipedia:Transclusion. To start the sandbox, all you have to do is copy the code into Template:Infobox MLB retired/Sandbox; there is no special procedure to set them up. — Carl (CBM · talk) 20:54, 17 January 2008 (UTC)

(reset indent)

Ok, but don't forget to update the documentation for this template over at {{Infobox MLB retired/doc}}. This is an unprotected sub-page for just such a reason. Because when I saw this edit to Hank Greenberg, I almost reverted it because the template still implies that team colors should be used. It wasn't until I dug around a bit and found Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Baseball/Archive_5#Neutral Colors in Infobox that there was a hint that the grey colors may have been agreed upon. — MrDolomite • Talk 22:10, 18 January 2008 (UTC)
Ack forgot to mention that an admin will be needed to edit the main template to add the information from WP:DOC like {{Documentation}} so it is clear that the documentation is separate from the actual template itself. — MrDolomite • Talk 22:12, 18 January 2008 (UTC)
Please hold off for a bit on making major changes to the colors in the template. The discussion has been reopened at Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Baseball#Infobox_colors_----_again.--Fabrictramp (talk) 21:45, 19 January 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Nationality

I think that the nationality parameter should be added to all templates about people. The general Person infobox does have it and there is no reason to omit it in these other templates. Birthplace is not enough in some cases.

{{#if:{{{nationality<includeonly>|</includeonly>}}} |
! Nationality
{{!}} {{{nationality}}}
{{!}}-
}}

Preferably placed under the birthname parameter. -RayLast (talk) 15:07, 7 February 2008 (UTC)

This is an age-old question here. How is "nationality" determined? This would open a whole nasty can of worms. —Wknight94 (talk) 17:59, 7 February 2008 (UTC)
Sometimes it's hard to find out someone's nationality. I see edit wars over it all the time.►Chris NelsonHolla! 22:47, 7 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Colors

Now that the infobox colors have been removed, someone needs to remove the four color-related parameters from the text on this page. I just spent an hour trying to figure out why the colors weren't rendering. Heh. -- χγʒ͡ʒγʋᾳ (talk) 19:58, 12 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Hall of fame titlebar

Is there a reason the HOF titlebar is split into two bars? I think it would look better jointed:
