[edit] Flags
The flags in this template are not needed also the have potential to cause confusion with the inclusion of both the EU and German flags. --Barryob (Contribs) (Talk) 14:00, 4 March 2008 (UTC)
- I do not see the explicit need for these flags, but neither do I see the harm in their inclusion. Keeping only the German flag is also fine with me. So I have no opinion in this matter.
But after looking at WP:FLAGS, point #1 makes it pretty clear: Flag images should be useful to the reader, not merely decorative. Also, similar boxes do not appear to use flag images like this (apart from other German ones, that is) and there are definitely none that use the EU flag like this.
So after that, I'd say that the flags should probably go, particularly the EU flag, whose usage is definitely the more decorative of the two. - 52 Pickup (deal) 15:10, 4 March 2008 (UTC)
[1], [2] The flags represent the current political influence in the city of Berlin. The reference images demonstrate the Berlin parliament (as a German state) inside and outside. Presenting flags in infoboxes is widespread among many city articles and provides additional information. Lear 21 (talk) 14:17, 8 March 2008 (UTC)
- This template is not about the Berlin Parliament its for the States of Germany, the EU particularly serves no function whatsoever apart from decoration it should go. --Barryob (Contribs) (Talk) 13:59, 9 March 2008 (UTC)
- I think as per Republic of Ireland and {{Infobox Country}} , also {{US state}} with New_York, the use of a national or super national flags here are only decorative Gnevin (talk) 08:24, 12 March 2008 (UTC)
Please stop edit warring over the flags. It's really not an important issue. -- Naerii ยท plz create stuff 13:28, 12 March 2008 (UTC)
The flags represent the 3 political spheres of legislation in Berlin as a German state. The EU particularly influences and finances a number of projects. Lear 21 (talk) 15:00, 12 March 2008 (UTC)
- I agree with Naerii: it is not an important issue. But since the template has been locked, some sort of solution should be reached to prevent the need for long-term locking.
- As correctly stated above, the template is for all 16 states, not just Berlin. So any Berlin-specific arguments here don't really hold any weight.
- Widespread use of flags in location infoboxes is in fact decreasing.
- The argument of funding doesn't make sense to me either. Projects all over the world are influenced and funded by the UN, but the UN flag isn't on all these location articles, is it?
- Almost no other European capitals have flags (the only exception that comes to mind is Paris, which has a French flag). Neither Brussels nor Brussels-Capital Region have any flags - and if an EU flag would go anywhere, than it would be there. But it isn't there.
- Lear, I'm trying to figure out why it is absolutely necessary to have the EU flag here (or the German one for that matter). But the arguments that I have seen here (and ones that I have myself thought of) just don't hold up. Still, I don't care either way - I just want a reasonable outcome so it is no longer necessary to keep such a small template (used only on 16 articles) locked. - 52 Pickup (deal) 15:37, 12 March 2008 (UTC)
Every German state is governed by state legislation, national law and EU law. This is represented by displaying all 3 respective flags in all 16 Bundesland parliaments. EU law furthermore applies in all 27 countries and all EU regions. This template is surely the first which consequently enacts the 3 spheres of political influence. The category of NUTS-regions established in the infobox makes it the ideal, logical place for the European Union flag. Lear 21 (talk) 00:26, 13 March 2008 (UTC)
- The NUTS region has nothing to do with EU law it is a statiscal region there is no real justification for the EU flags inclusions. --Barryob (Contribs) (Talk) 15:03, 13 April 2008 (UTC)
