[edit] Changing this box changes all cricketers!

I just reverted a change from user 61.3.237.20 which added "bowling economy" to the template.

I'd just like to emphasise that you can't edit the template without also editing all the cricketers who use it. In this case, the user added bowling economy stats to Sachin Tendulkar, but left an ugly mess on all other cricketers.

It's also probably not a good idea to add more stats to the template. It's meant to be a quick summary. If we listed every interesting stat about every cricketer, it would soon become unwieldy.

It's probably best if changes to the template are discussed on Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Cricket before being implemented.

Maybe this sounds very prescriptive. It's not meant to be. We all value everyone's contributions. But there are certain common mistakes that people make, which have to be reverted, and that doesn't help anyone.

Thanks. Stephen Turner 09:02, 28 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Seeing as changes to the template are made infrequently and by people by know what their doing, the "edit this template" link was removed, especially now MediaWiki lists all the templates when you edit a page. I have removed the warning comment as it was forcing a line-break, and isn't really necessary now the edit link is gone. ed g2stalk 23:42, 11 August 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Overs or Balls bowled

I've added the option of choosing whether you want to display Overs bowled or Balls bowled in the infobox. This is because Cricinfo shows balls bowled for cricketers who bowled both 8- and 6-ball overs during their career. To use this option, type either

oversORballs=overs|

or

oversORballs=balls|

If the parameter is not included (on all articles created before this change), the template will default to overs. Note that the parameters Test overs and ODI overs are still named the same no matter whether you choose balls or overs - to reduce workload due to the change. AlbinoMonkey (Talk) 05:17, 3 January 2006 (UTC)

Great! I used it in Mudassar Nazar. Stephen Turner (Talk) 17:22, 7 January 2006 (UTC)

The switch template which was used to add this functionality is one of the meta-templates which are actively being removed to reduce server load issues. To avoid having this template break when 'switch' gets deleted I changed the way it works. The functionality is exactly the same, but instead of using 'oversORballs=balls|' to set that option you should use 'balls=true|'. I made this change for all existing uses of the template. For 'overs' you can continue just not setting the parameter at all and it will default to that form. --CBD 13:17, 15 January 2006 (UTC)

Why does this template use "test overs" and "ODI overs" when it is actually referring to balls in every case. I have never myself heard of cricket statistics which emphasise overs, everyone talks about balls. Ansell 22:30, 5 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Name

The name on the top of the box is not fully aligned to the left. It starts with a space. That looks awkward to me. Is there any way to fix it? - Ganeshk (talk) 00:06, 7 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] ICC ranking of player

I feel the current ICC ranking of the player in tests and ODI should also find a mention in this infobox. Idleguy 14:46, 20 February 2006 (UTC)

Personally, I am reluctant to add any more fields to the box. I think it's already quite a lot of numbers, without four more (assuming you had batting and bowling rankings). And it doesn't work for retired players. (If we had to add another stat, I'd add ODI strike rate first). Stephen Turner (Talk) 15:24, 20 February 2006 (UTC)
I feel that the ranking should be included. It is a very good indication of player's current level. For retired players, we can give the career best batting and bowling rating. I feel this is important as it is an official rating and a good indicator. (Also, it is similar to the FIDE ratings for chess and gives us a good idea of the player's level). Vinwe 08:57, 5 April 2007 (UTC)
Another reason I don't like it is because it changes even when a player hasn't played a match. So we wouldn't just have to edit players who've played a match recently: whenever the ICC updates their rankings we'd have to edit every current player. That's just not feasible. Stephen Turner (Talk) 09:05, 5 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Best bowling

It is unclear from the template whether "best bowling" refers to by innings or by match. If it were by innings, then it should say that, as it is in the "test" column. Ansell 22:45, 5 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Flag/nationality

I don't think it should be a huge flag right next to the name. Rather it should be more like Template:Infobox Ice Hockey Player where the nationality is still there, but takes up much less room. I am not a fan of cricket, nor have I ever seen a game (I'm not sure if they even show it in the US, or it's rare if they do), so I am not familiar with it. If nationality is important enough to make it huge like that, leave it. But, nationality is just as important in hockey as it would be in cricket. It just looks more attractive and neat when it takes up less room like in Template:Infobox Ice Hockey Player. Just edit the template itself to change it from the huge thing, to the little space so you don't have to edit every article, it'll go to the new space automatically. This is just my opinion, but I'm sure some people would agree. But, again, I do not watch cricket so I know nothing about it...just wanted to say this. Bsroiaadn 05:25, 26 March 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for your thoughts. But actually, I think it is rather different in ice hockey. In ice hockey, the most important thing is which club he plays for, not which country. But because the very top cricketers spend most of their playing time with their country, not their club, the focus is on the country there. Stephen Turner (Talk) 08:41, 26 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Date of birth

The date of birth (and death) should be included in the template. Use: {{birth date and age}}. =Nichalp «Talk»= 17:50, 26 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Overs of balls?

I think I came across a problem with the template. In the Thilan Thushara article, the infobox syntax is "test overs", but it's displayed as "Balls bowled". I'm not too good with templates, so anyone know what's up here? --snowolfD4 ( talk / @ ) 22:46, 30 August 2007 (UTC)

You need to use oversORballs=overs or oversORballs=balls to change it from one to the other. Stephen Turner (Talk) 07:06, 31 August 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Phasing out?

OK, maybe this is a better place to raise this question? Now that we have a template which most people seem to think is better - {{Infobox cricketer biography}} - should we just replace this page with a redirect to that template? The result would be something like (for Javed Omar) User:Sam Vimes/Sandbox46 - not quite updated, of course, but at least it looks the same while a full replacement is done. Sam Vimes | Address me 21:50, 31 August 2007 (UTC)

Actually, I never realised that you could use the new one instead of the old one without conversion. If it works for all sets of parameters, I agree we should replace this with a redirect immediately. Stephen Turner (Talk) 07:50, 1 September 2007 (UTC)
Having tried it out, it seems to work with most parameters.
It won't be a straight redirect though, as this template will call the Infobox cricketer biography template with the required details. Sam Vimes | Address me 08:10, 1 September 2007 (UTC)
