- An example is to the right.
- All fields are optional (except for 'Name')
- Images must be specified in a format like
|Image = [[Image:Image name.png|170px]]
— leaving out the[[...]]
markup causes a table layout error in Internet Explorer. The caption is handled as a separate template parameter, not an [[Image:...]] parameter. - All information in the infobox should also be in the article prose, in some (usually more not less detailed) form, and should be sourced there. Please do not put reference citations in the infobox nor add information to the infobox before adding it the main article text. Infoboxes are convenient summarizations of important stats from articles; they are not articles unto themselves and should not be treated as such.
- The official rankings for the 2007/2008 season are available here. Do not use provisional rankings in the infobox, although they can be included (if noted as provisional) in the main text of the article. Wait until the official rankings are released for the 2008/2009 season (or when the season has just finished, use the rankings from here as they are usually correct, and the official rankings take a long time before they are released) before editing the data in the infobox; also wait until the field name is changed to reflect the current season and the article for the Snooker world rankings 2008/2009 is made. Make sure all articles that contain this infobox are updated; this should be done in one long editing session when the infobox field is updated, to ensure that none of them are left out. This will probably be co-ordinated from the Snooker WikiProject.
- Fill in what tournaments a player has won in the actual article, in a separate section from the rest, rather than in the infobox. Only list the number of events that player has won, in the infobox's Ranking wins and Other wins fields, apart from the World champ field, where you can list the years.
- The Best finish field, is for listing the best performance of players who have not won a ranking tournament yet, and should list the tournament that the player has progressed furthest in.
- If a player has won all their tournaments before the 1973/1974 (1976/1977 is when the first snooker world rankings were published) season, list them under Major wins = (not shown above), like in the John Pulman, Fred Davis and Walter Donaldson articles.
- If a player has won some tournaments before and after the 1973/1974 season, list them according to Snooker world ranking tournaments.
- Flag templates: Please use flags properly, per Wikipedia:Don't overuse flags (it is not an official guideline yet, but will probably become part of the Wikipedia:Manual of Style fairly soon):
-
- Flag templates are only used for the Nationality field in the infobox (and should be used there, with the excepetion of Northern Ireland). Format:
| Nationality = {{flagicon|England}} [[England|English]]}}
- Flag templates are never used for birth/death places, as this improperly implies citizenship/nationality that simply may not apply (many people are born, and even die, abroad).
- Emphatically do not use the Ulster banner, {{flagicon|Northern Ireland}}: for "Nationality" in infoboxes. This flag does not officially or civically represent N.I. any longer and hasn't in years. Meanwhile (much more seriously) use of the flag to indicate someone's nationality as a person (which is what infobox usage does) is a major point of view problem. The U.B. is a major Unionist political rallying symbol; using it in infoboxes implies a political position not a nationality. Technically, the proper infobox usage for people from N.I. is
| Nationality = {{flagicon|UK}} [[Northern Ireland|Northern Irish]]}}
, as the Union Jack is the only official flag of N.I. as of 2007. Irish Nationalists are equally offended by this, however, making that, too, a p.o.v.-pushing issue. - The Ulster Banner is appropriate for use in sports statistics tables, such as tournament results, because the flag, curiously, does have official status in various sport federations as the flag of N.I. for sporting purposes, and it carries no political connotations when used in this context. So, for example, Alex Higgins should have no flag in his infobox, but in ranking tournament results would have the Ulster Banner, and if he participated in some Mosconi Cup-like multinational team snooker event (e.g. Europe vs. Asia-Pacific or something) represtenting the UK, those sport stats results would have him with a Union Jack. Update: There is growing though still marginal consensus in other sports articles to use a shamrock to represent Northern Ireland. This debate is not settled as of May 2007, but it is unlikely that this usage will offend anyone. The specific image can be found easily in N.I. footballer's infoboxes.
