In general, you must use only portraits that have been licensed under the GNU Free Documentation License (GFDL) or under the Attribution (CC-BY) or Attribution-Sharealike (CC-BY-SA) Creative Commons licenses. If an image is not licensed in one of these ways, it may only be used if Wikipedia's non-free content criteria are satisfied. In particular, the first criterion states: "Non-free content is used only where no free equivalent is available, or could be created, that would serve the same encyclopedic purpose." This means that unlicensed images of living persons found on the Internet are generally not allowed as it is always possible for someone to take a photograph and license it to Wikipedia under a GFDL or CC license.

When making fair use of a non-free image, you must provide a detailed fair-use rationale (reason why you claim that use of the image is fair) on the image description page for each article that the image is used in: for further information, see Help:Image page#Use rationale.

If you do not have a suitable portrait for the infobox, consider using a picture of a coat of arms; religious venue; a crosier, mitre or throne; or some other suitable image that indicates the person's religion. You may be able to find such images on the Wikimedia Commons.

[edit] Microformat

The HTML markup produced by this template includes an hCard microformat, which makes the person's details parsable by computers, either acting automatically to catalogue articles across Wikipedia or via a browser tool operated by a reader, to (for example) add the subject to an address book. For more information about the use of microformats on Wikipedia, please see the microformat project.

Date-of-birth ("bday") parameters will only be included in the microformat if {{Birth date}} or {{Birth date and age}} are used in the infobox.

hCard uses HTML classes including:

  • adr
  • bday
  • county-name
  • fn (required)
  • honorific-prefix
  • honorific-suffix
  • label
  • locality
  • nickname
  • note
  • org
  • role
  • vcard

Please do not rename or remove these classes.
